Has anyone removed the rotating parts from the alternator without removing the alternator from the engine?  I want to service the bearing and am wondering if I can just remove the rotating portion?  I am unable to muscle the alternator and am hoping I can get away with not removing the heavy boat anchor!  The alternator is a delco air cooled 275 amp 24volt.  John L

The 50DN is the heaviest alternator right at 100lbs.  I believe yours is around the 85lb range.  Just make a 2x4 ramp to slide the alternator out of the bus.  It is almost impossible to work on an alternator while still in the bus.  Then you'll be able to test it before reinstalling in case something isn't quite right.  Get another person to help you with the movement.  Good Luck, TomC

I just pulled mine out of my 5A. i weighed it just for fun and it was right around 115lbs. No room for anybody to help me. I just used a small piece of plywood to slide it out over my muffler shield to get it out. To get it back up and in,....tip one side a little and stick a board under it, tip the other side and stick a board under it,.....repeat as needed to get it up until you can slide it back in. :)
Used to own a 1968 MCI 5A and a 1977 5C.

Thanks for the info was hoping to be able to just pull the rotating portion out so I could service the bearings.  I will wait until My son gets back from the sand pit and let Him struggle with the thing.  John L
