ruthi, you best get some sort of fuel surcharge worked out, and fast.

Anyone whose income is tied to travel who doesn't include a variable fuel surcharge is asking to be run into the poor house.

Ask any trucker what happened before they wised up...

DEMAND IT, otherwise you are subsidizing the profits of someone else.

This week I went into town to pick up some plastic, and when presented the bill, it was higher than expected (what a surprise eh?) so I asked them why.  He said that the reason the bill was some $9 higher was because of a "fuel surcharge out of Kansas City."  So I said, "Yeah, I just drove 18 miles into town to pick up this item and no one paid me a fuel surcharge."

Long story short, I got them to remove it as they had not previously informed me it would be on the bill.

My trash company came out ONE TIME this month and I was billed $16.98 fuel charge on that.  It seems it is as you say, "everyone is getting on the bandwagon" and guess who is taking it in the shorts as usual.

"$399.9 at local truck stop here in Connecticut on I84."  .... Man, I hope that is a typo, if it isn't, we are dead in the water for sure.

My trash hauler has had a fuel surcharge applied since at least 2007.  I don't think it is anywhere close to $16 though.  It varies based on the cost of diesel.

Here in the cold country, 25 miles from the refinery, gas is 392.9/10 and diesel 408.9/10. Go figure.

Here in ID. 3.68 as of to day. Good for some one like me looking to buy a bus. Bad if I wont to drive it.

It will go back down, but eventually these are the kinds of prices we should expect to pay, and then some.

There are some really bad reasons why it does go up.

It used to be that anyone making claims fuel was going to go up or down had as much probablity as the weatherman. It doesnt feel that way anymore. It seems whenever the news media goes all out to tell us it will be $5 by Memorial Day, it will be $5.

If it does go up over $5 gallon, and stays there, you can stick a fork in us.

We are on a trip and have been in Nashville for about a week.  Truck stop prices are around 3.65.  Cheapest gas station diesel price on gasbuddy is 3.44.  Local secret:  I found a Kroger store with fuel and tanked up yesterday at 3.18, plus got another 10 cents off for our reward card, making 3.08 !!  Two days ago the station was 2.97 but I didn't get the bus over there fast enough.  Still, the best price around (the whole country) that I could find.  If anyone is around here, the store/station is just off Hwy 70 (Lebanon RD) and east of Hwy 155 near Opreyland.  Bus access is doable.  HTH

With the economy the way it is right now AND now all the unrest in the middle east........ Im pretty sure fuel will just continue to rise, maybe up to about 6.50 before it starts coming down... but I also think some enterprising company is going to come out with some kinda fix for our oil addiction, weather it requires a modification to our vehicles or a fuel substitute or whatever I dont know.. But Im kinda doom and gloom when it comes to this subject anyway, even in better times

Good for you Boomer!!! BTW that is the name of my very loyal doggy :)

If oil prices continue to skyrocket, driving the price of fuel beyond reach for the average consumer, I wouldn't be suprised to see another recession.  Especially if the price goes up and stays up for a long period.  Simple economics says that your extra cash will go to pay for fuel.  When that runs out then you start looking where you can cut back so you stop buying even more goods.  Less demand for goods equals less need for manufacturing causing businesses to cut back (think layoffs).  Those people that get laid off have even less money to spend so they cut back...and the cycle just continues.  Many on this site have said that $5.00/gal. is the break point where they will sell or park.  125 gal of fuel at $5 is $625.  A few fill ups at that price and the vacation money gets thin quickly.
