I've been hoping for a full set of jakes for my 8v71.  this pops up right when i have cooling issues i need to fix and I can't afford to buy it?  such is life!
Some are called, some are sent, some just got up and went.

Just a note of caution - this eBay seller has been offering jakes for months. I bought a similar set from him (mine included tall valve covers) this past fall. My mechanic examined them and said they needed to be rebuilt to be safe - he saw bad springs, o-rings, missing parts, etc.  The rebuild kits are available from DD but were on a two month back order from Jacobs. It took a lot of coast-to-coast searching, but finally found a rebuild kit out in California (a member of this board) for several hundred more dollars.
When I told the jakes seller they needed rebuilding he said they looked in pretty good shape to him when he shipped them, but he would look around and help me find a rebuild kit. Never heard from him again. My hunch is that they are well-used take-outs from a logging truck operation.

It sounds like even if you rebuild them you can come out good on this. I am not sure how a Jake can become unsafe. Mine just quite working when something goes wrong. I find them the simplest thing ever to work on. Now if you are paying shop rates, then the cost can go up a lot. Seeing used sets for over $500 and they are also "used", I don't think they buyer could go wrong with this. I agree though that buying anything used is a gamble.

The more I thought about this I would say that the seller should have let you return the set you bought in exchange for another if he has several. I didn't see that he made any claim in the Ebay listing that would lead me to believe he was trying to deceive a buyer. Even NIMCO who sells lots of used "running" parts, has a disclaimer that you are buying "guaranteed rebuildable". Even with that NIMCO has always stood behind the used parts they sold me. So the seller is missing the opportunity to really shine.

I purchased at the same time a friend did a Russian Tokarev. These are being sold as used guns in good to very good condition. He gets one that has been shot and shows some wear, I get one never shot, never issued. Luck of the draw. Let's hope this set of Jakes that was purchased will need nothing, and then the buyer will have a better than great deal.

The seller says he will add the valve covers for $30. I think that is also a good buy.
