Another fan question. How much horsepower does a fan drive need to be rated for? Working on Prevost with 60 series. I have in my shop a box rated at 32hp.  1800 rpm        Am I safe using it?   Bob

That would be marginal.  Yes, you're alright up to 1800rpm, but most engines do go up to 21-2300rpm-of which time the fan would be consuming closer to 50hp.  I would aim at 50hp at 2400rpm-if that rating was even available.  Good Luck, TomC

Needs to be around 52 hp Bob pretty standard  for a Prevost with the 60 series and air to air

According to Caterpillar's 'Understanding Coach/ RV performance' brochure:
- For their C13 engine rated at 525 HP ;
- at 1900 engine rpm, the fan load is 62 HP
- at 1800 engine rpm, the fan load is 50 HP
- at 1700 engine rpm, the fan load is 42 HP

So, I'm thinking if you use that gearbox, you are looking at a short service life.

Also, gearbox power ratings are dependant on duty cycle & the method of driving them. Having a rigid coupling will have larger derate than a soft coupling that cushions the input pulses. . . .

Will not chance the one I have: will order from Prevost $362 not bad but cheaper if you can use what you have. Already have Prevost plastic fan.    Thanks   Bob           Completion date less final paint  July 1st 2011.   Maybe if I type date it will come true.
