I did my own window installs............sides and windshields....the side windows were a beast.....the front windows were worse!   I broke two windows doing the install.........I think that $250 was a bargain...LOL!

Art, the lock has never came with the seal for Eagle windshields FWIW watch the seal they send Eagle used 2 different seals you need the wide a little over 1 inch the 20's and 15 had the best seal because of it's larger size

Again Clifford is 100% right on!
I once asked the guy @ Union City Glass why he was charging about twice more than someone else quoted me. His response was exactly that!
"If they break the glass who pays for the new one you, or them?  I may not like it, but if my guys break one we pay for it!" And he apologized (for a second!) when he raised my price by 50% on the S417's from $100 to $150. He said "I know it's more, but those new windshields gotta run $500-600 each!" (he nearly got me with the coffee he spit up when I told him "try $1200 each, but the shipping is free!") His delayed response was "um' good thing we have insurance just incase!"
Every since he mentioned the fact that they pay for replacing broken ones I always take it to them. (especially the S417's) The way I look at it is $1200 + $150 = a whole lot less than $1200 + $1200 + $1200 + - - - - - - (you get the idea!)

Bob that is about right with what I pay considering they came to you and have to charge time from and back to the shop.

I used to pay $100 each windshield until we got the new Setra's and now they charge my $150 each as the new ones are so huge! (but I take the bus to them !)
That was in Union City, I haven't looked for a local company yet as I've not replaced any since we moved!

BK, have you had a Dina windshield replaced yet?  JD charges me something like $1,500 labor to change one out.  The Dinas don't have a lock strip like a normal windshield and the seal is huge.  Both windshields have to come out to replace one.  It cost close to $3,000 for two new windshields, rubber seal, and labor the first time.  When I hit the goose and broke just one windshield it cost around $2,000.

Luckily, I have full glass coverage and my insurance paid both times.  My insurer didn't balk at the bill.  I was going to pay myself to have the windshields resealed, but the auto glass place showed me where the windshields were delaminating and the windshields needed replacement.  I didn't do it right away and then remembered some months later that I have full glass coverage.

Brian,
No I haven't had to replace any in the Dina yet. And if Union City Glass says it'll be anywhere close to $1500 labor (we have the windshields shipped to them and we pay for them) the guy that owns it will be paying! (it is on lease to us, and not really our bus! We just keep it here and run it when needed and make sure the maintenance is kept up!)

My guy told me that they had stopped doing motorhomes because of exactly that.  The windshields are really expensive and they end up breaking after a day because the frames flex so he wouldn't do them anymore.  He probably wouldn't have done mine either but I asked so nicely.   ;D

I guess it depends how much you're paying for the glass.  At $250 for my glass I'd chance doing it myself before I paid anybody $250 to put it in.

When I had my windshield replaced last year due to hitting the goose C&J Bus Repair broke the first windshield and had to order another one on their dime.  The windshields cost between $300 and $400 each.  My bus ended up sitting at C&J Bus Repair for a month.  JD would only have one of his guys do the windshield and he was on vacation one week plus it took at least a week to get a new windshield.

Brian,
Not knocking JD or anything (I have always gotten good prices on parts from him and SO MUCH valuable advice from him I could never complain about him or his prices), but @ $1500 labor I would be most upset if they didn't replace a broken one on their dime!
With a labor cost like that it's almost as if there is already a replacement built in just in case!
Just my honest opinion!

If I had been paying I certainly would have challenged the cost.  Since the insurance company was paying, I never saw the itemized bill to question it.  JD sent an estimate to the insurance company, got a purchase order from them, and sent them the final bill.

JD said after the first time he replaced the two windshields that he wouldn't do it again, but he did replace another one when I hit the goose.

MCI 102A3 had both windshields changed out with new gasket in 2008 Took the glass man about four hours to complete the job. We got the windshields fairly easily. Then we started the install. Just couldn't get the lock strip in around the corners.  So I told him lets tackle this job tomorrow when the sun is full on the windshield. Should go better in the heat. He agreed. Came the next day and the lock strip went fully in within an hour. He also replaced the worn windshield on the '02 Jetta. Total bill $325.
Those three piece windshields are not high on my 'Gee I really want to that again list'.
