Joe, I know about the adjustment screws inside the spacer I told the guys here they need to check the alternator every 100,000 miles I also know the 92 series uses a special cam shaft to drive that beast that breaks I just shipped one to Don Fairchild for a 8v92.
You can use anything you wish on your engine but never will you see that time bomb on a engine I own that bomb will go off in time if never kept in check believe what you want makes no difference to me

good luck

Clifford, I know what your talking about.  A friend of mine bought a 4905 2 years ago and his 50DN grenaded before he got it home.  It took out the bell housing and 3 of the gears inside.  Bus has been sitting in Crescent City ever since getting a little work here and there as he can afford it.
Some are called, some are sent, some just got up and went.

One of the tell tale signs that the 50DN has been up graded is the additional exterior oil lines.  The original has the oil line coming into the front (by the engine) bearing.  The upgraded has a T in the oil line leading to the rear bearing also.  Good Luck, TomC

For us new to this, can someone explain the problem and things to look out for with the 50DN alternators?...
My 59 4104 has a positive ground 50DN, the oil supply line comes in at the right end of the alternator looking at the engine from the rear of the bus. I understand from a post on this topic that the originals had the oil line coming in to the left or engine end of the alternator? I get a little nervous when I read about them described as a grenade.

Thanks

A good place for information is the Delco Remy website.   Google 50DN manuals.    Service information and upgrade info is available.
