About a school bus conversion [regarding heat] here?  I know some bus folks look at us as lowlifes, but we have a reason.  We're a gospel quartet that needed something to travel in.  We needed something inexpensive and extremely tough, that gets good mileage.  We've got a 1995 Blue Bird All-American R/E.

There ya go....I confessed.

We're a gospel quartet that needed something to travel in.

One of my buses was a Blue Bird, had it about seven years, tough, reliable and uglier than a bar of homemade soap.  But it got the job done.

I guess that I still consider the classic Blue Bird bus/RV to be a beautiful thing.  We did a Blue Bird rally many years ago in Perry, GA and I spent many hours marveling at the great restorations of this classic vehicles.

As has been said, welcome and ask to your heart's content.

Might suggest that you add a signature and make sure your titles are specific so that they draw in folks who can help.

Are you kidding? I love school bus conversions! They are the 4 wheelin of the buses! They are designed to go on the highway, around town or out on a country road! I couldnt decide for awhile if I want the sports car bus (the RTS) or the 4 wheeler! I am a HUGE fan of this guy http://www.vonslatt.com/ he converted a school bus with very little money into an awesome RV that anyone would be proud to have. The only problem with his conversion that I can see for my climate, is the insulation especially on the roof....... he needed some! But his bus was built with 2nd hand stuff and junk yard finds.

I looked through your album and you are doing an awesome job but you really do need to insulate. Dont use the pink fiberglass stuff, stick with styrofoam or the aluminum foil or bubble wrap stuff. Dont get anything that can absorb moisture. And at least keep the roof white.

I've got plenty of insulation on the floor and lower walls. I can't do anything about the windows shy of thermal curtains. The ceiling I will have to eventually insulate I suppose. The bus will probably be white. If not, the roof wil be white with ceramic beads in it. That won't be til spring, seeing winter is pretty close to here for us.

I would venture to guess that a lot of us started with a school bus at one point or another, mine was a 1936 chevy, supercool to me, I think I was 14 when I dragged it out of a barn and started playing with it, my big brother got interested cause he loved engines of all sorts and he actually had a drivers license so that really helped, it ran from day one but had a few 'road' repairs done over the years to deal with but it was mine for 20 bucks and came with all the stuff that had been jammed into it over the years, one of the treasures I found tucked inside was a split bamboo fly rod with an old martin reel in very nice shape, I actually sold that to an insane fly fishing addict, he kept saying stuff like wow, it's hand made and came from maine and stuff like that so I let him continue to talk until he talked himself into paying me 500 for it and I let him. Life was and is good. lol

Peter -

You've got a tough old Bird there!

What powertrain do you have in it?  Depending on where it came from, some are geared such that 55 mph is top speed.

The thing about this coach is that the majority of running gear is off-the-shelf Class 8 HD Truck parts, so availability is a plus.

Might also suggest that you paint the wheels white.  Hard to see the little rust streaks that come from a slightly loose lug nut on a black wheel!

Also would like to suggest that you edit your profile so that you've got a signature at the bottom of your posts - and if you'll include the city & state where you're located, there might be some other busnuts around who can share their experiences with you.

Welcome aboard!!

Welcome!

My first bus was a 1952 Ford shorty! I didn't get to do much with it, but would have loved to convert it. That was back when I was in my 30's and had the energy and strength!  ;)

Good Luck and ask away!

Nice post Opus, your Blue Bird certainly is in better shape than mine was, it looks real good.

Thanks for putting this up.

Thanks, the bus has an 8.3 Cummins with a 643 attached to it.  195,000 miles and it will do about 73 mph pinned.
