How do I insure and register vehicles that are in AZ when I am not a resident?

If that has been your experience Tom then you have been lucky.  I've had a variety of insurance claim experience over the years but generally the bigger the numbers the more likely it is that they will start out by saying "you don't have coverage (unless you can prove that you do)" and the dance begins.  I have come to believe that you need a committed broker involved in the transaction because he can go to bat for you in the event of a claim.  Individually you are just one contract among thousands or millions.  The broker on the other hand is an ongoing revenue stream for the insurer and they pay a little more attention to him.

JMO of course but they don't build those fancy office buildings by paying out claims.

There was a landslide involving our property and a couple of neighbors. One of the involved parties hired a broker to hound the insurer, and eventually got the insurer to pay $10,000 to make him go away. We never paid a dime except to get an attorney up to speed. He sent one letter.

When an Allstate insured hit our building, Allstate was nowhere to be found until Doreen made up her mind to call the adjuster's office every day. About a month later, we got a check for most of our claim. Another party to the same accident hired an attorney because he wasn't happy with Allstate. He hasn't been paid anything, and it's been two years, next month.

He has high hopes. I figured that they were going to be hard to deal with because their stock sank like a rock after the beginning of the recession.
