Coming down I-5 we have done the LA bypass by turning off at Gorman and going on 138 to I-15 and then down to I-10 and on to Palm Springs.  Looking at the map it looks like i could miss more of the LA basin by going thru Victorville on 18 to 247 to Yucca Valley and then down to Palm Springs. Question is how is the road from Victorville to Yucca Valley? Good, bad, worth doing or not?  I have been on the road between Palm Springs and Yucca Valley with the jeep so i know that about that stretch of road.

Ed,

The Cajon Pass route you normally do (138/15/10) is faster.

If you are going further west than Palm Srpings, though, I like the route west out of Yucca Valley and then south through the park -- beautiful drive.

Overnight parking at the visitor center in YV, and great boondocking just south of the park.  Both on my blog.

Sean, we are headed to Palm Springs and then on to Yuma by way of either Quartzsite or the Salton Sea. Speed isn't that important this trip, i would rather miss a lot of traffic if possible. That is why i was asking about 247. It would get us around the San Bernardino to Banning stretch of I-10.  We are just killing some time waiting for the temps to drop, we have been staying  near your old stomping grounds, been at Bass Lake for the last week. ;D The restaurant across from the Oakhurst Elks looks closed by the way, and it has a for sale sign on it.

Hi Ed,
We used to go Cajon Pass but started going from Victorville to Yucca Valley a few years ago. The road is great and downhill most of the way.
Good Luck

Ed -

Stay up at Bass Lake another week - it's supposed to be in the upper '90s to 100 thru next Friday.

Have you enjoyed a meal at Ducey's?

If you decide to come back thru Fresno, you & Stevi are welcome to ONP out front again, just let me know.

How was King's Canyon/Sequoia?
