Where should the oil level be to the block for a  8v 71?  I go through the first gal. in no time then it sees to hold at that level a lot longer.  Ron

I think the way Clifford told me to check the oil level on my 8V92 would also apply to your 8V71. Find out how much oil DD says should be in your engine, put in that amount less 1 gallon, check where that comes on the dip stick, add the final gallon, and check where that comes on the dip stick. Then do as Bob said with the dipstick on the outside of the tube to determine the correct level on the block. There are more than one style of oil pan used on these engines so to be safe do as Clifford advises. My 8V92 is at the correct level when the oil is about 1" above the "Full" mark on the dipstick and that puts the oil level above the joint between block and pan. On the 8V71 in the GM4106 that we had, with the tilted engine and an adaptor between the block and the pan, the oil level was at the joint between the low side of the block and the pan.
If I kept the oil to the "Full" mark on the dipstick of the 8V71 it would throw out a gallon in a short time. If I kept the oil to the "Add" line the engine used very little oil. So, I kept it at the "Add" line and checked the level often to prevent it from getting much below the "Add" line. Your results may be different.

You don't give us all the information..which is typical. We're not mind readers here. What make and model B you fell you us is it that you own? Most 8V-71's in an MCI hold 7 Gallons of oil. There is a part number on the dipstick and all you need to do is check with the Local DD Dealer to see if the dipsick is right.

The Engineers who designed these (very expensive) engines knew how much oil they should carry to give them the proper amount of lubrication and, yes, cooling.

It's your engine so do what you wish but don't come back and complain that someone here gave you bad advice.

If I sound harsh, I mean to. This is your learning moment. Follow the advice of the people who designed the engine and it will bring you home every time!

I'm sorry about not giving all the info. My bus is a 58 Kossbrough/ Eagle. I will check the dip stick with the tube. and if it checks out I will adjust I do check the oil level often and I've had and lived in the the bus for 20 years come this Oct. I have talked to many mechanics and bus owners and have had as many opinions.
Thanks for your help  Ron

Congratulations Ron!  ;D I just stumbled across this thread and if I'm reading your post correctly, you've been fulltiming in your '1958' Eagle for 20 years! My wife even says how wonderful that is  ;D You are obviously very attached to your bus. Hope to see your posts here for the next 20, Will
