Kinda OT: How do I attach safety chains to a trailer?

I weld loops of typically 1/2" mild steel rod and loop one link of the chain through the loop.  Quick links that I have seen are not rated, I think you need to use transport rated fairly heavy chain and fixtures.  If your trailer is lighter, you can obviously use lighter chain.  It;s good to use hooks that have snap closures.

I did the same as Brian(bevans6) and welded loops on with the chain through the loop.

I am also a big fan of crossing the chains for the reasons stated above.

I suggest you cut the old links off the bottom of the hitch, and weld the new chains in place. Problem solved.

A lot easier said than done.  I don't thingk that three or four hours would even be enough to grind off the old links the way they welded them on.

NEVER FORGET THE MAIN DESIGN SO MANY PEOPLE FORGET IS THAT THE SAFETY CHAINS MAIN JOB IS TO
NEVER LET THE TONGUE GET DOWN TO DIG INTO THE PAVEMENT. gUARANTEED IT WILL RUIN YOUR DAY IF IT DOES.

You may have to weld some loops on the tongue to support the chains up and not dangle away from the tongue and remember where you hook on tow rig shall be two separate eyes to fasten chains to to support tongue in a up from the ground if trailer comes unhooked for what ever reason. and no grab hooks that are open shall be used must be a closing type fasterner. Be safe the life u save could be your own or one of my loved ones in that case may god have mercy on you.
