I owned both while in business the Allison and the Duramax  hands down the best over the Dodge and Cummins and you can even carry on a conversation and hear the stereo in a Duramax  lol AC problems were the weak point on the Chev or GMC.
I had good luck from the 7.3 in the Fords just their transmissions like Dodge were junk.
Fwiw my wife has a Trek MH on a Workhorse chassis with the Duramax and Allision nice setup you would never believe who makes that chassis it is made by Navistar the 7.3 engine people

good luck
Life is short drink the good wine first

Clifford,

I forgot to mention, that is why I got our Ford with a manual tranny. Because otherwise those trucks seem to eat the auto trannys like candy. So far so good with the manual.

But I agree, that the GMC is hands down the best. I just am too poor to afford one of those ;).

God bless,

John

Our "Family Pickup" was a 99 F-350 w/7.3 and a standard trans...bought it off my grandfather in 03 with 150k on it ...after some light research i started burning anything i could get my hands on through it! Installed a Double filter kit inline and I ran used engine oil/soy/"sludge" (horrible byproduct of fuel refinement)and when warm enough straight WVO w/out a heater system.. I sold it last fall with 568k on it and we never did ANYTHING other then wearables(Brakes,Tires,Clutch) with regular service i don't know how you could go wrong.. OTOH i've recently drove a bowtie and a Ram and must say they where both very very responsive. The new ford 6.7 seems pretty popular among "Full Timers" that pass through our campground as summer is ending! Honestly you'll read horror stories about every single one of these trucks from one era or another! Drive em! take the one of your liking! If the ol'dodge still has life in it run it till it quits!(witch could be a VERY long time :) )

Good Luck

Eric

.... Dodge and Ford were smart not to screw around trying to make their own diesel and use commercial quality engines.

......

For 2011 ford built their own.        The Scorpion, exhaust to turbo inside the V and air intake outside the heads  6.7l claiming ab750 or so  ftlbs torque.

i have the old 7.3 idi
It's all fun and games til someone gets hurt. ;)

If you want power-the top of the heap is the new Ford 6.7 Diesel with 400hp and 800lb/ft torque (!!!).  None higher.  And extremely quiet.  Good Luck, TomC

Stock, that is  ;)

There're ISBs out there making 1000+hp and 2000+ lb-ft. I think most small diesels are limited by transmission. Anything over stock and you'll need atleast a new torque converter and valve body.
