SHURFlo Extreme Series 5.7 - Keep Accumulator Tank or Not?

Hi Fellow Nuts,

I am replacing old water pump with a SHURFlo Extreme Series 5.7.  The installation instructions say it does not require an accumulator tank.  My current setup already has an accumulator tank.  Should I keep the tank or remove it?  Here are a few pictures of my current setup.

I would continue to use the accumulator.   I think it would only help the pump  from cycling.

BTW, If you have not purchased the pump, I would suggest that you not spend the extra money for this pump.    The old stand by classic pump has demonstrated its reliability.

If you are desperate for the space, remove the tank.  If not, just leave it.  RV water pumps generally do not "require" an accumulator tank.  Mine does not have one.  However, the tank reduces pump cycling, and evens out the delivery.

I use that same pump without an accumulator, and have no supply or cycling issues.

IMHO, I would leave the tank inline. We installed one with ours, and we have two of those exact same pumps. We love those pumps (Nick Bademan suggestion). Anyways, I have liked the accumulator on there too. It seems to help somewhat.

Otherwise, we have our pumps installed to where we don't even hear it cycle.

I was at the Albuquerque get together two years ago hosted by Camping World.  The Shurflo factory rep was there and I asked a few questions about the new electronic Extreme Series.  He said yes they do what's advertised, but are very sensitive to any dirt, and can and do quit requiring new electronics.  The Classic series, on the other hand, with their simple spring loaded click switch is as reliable as a truck.  Point-I use two of the Whisper Kings in parallel.  Works great when someone is showering and other is washing dishes-don't have a volume issue.  The pumps have been in my bus for 16 years with NO servicing of any kind-not even adjusting them.  And they still pump turning off both at the same time.  I like it so much, I'm repeating it on my truck conversion.  Good Luck, TomC

Brian, I put a small RV tank in mine. My engine heats the water while I drive also, so if system is at full pressure and you drive it heat the rv style hot water tank and makes more pressure.  Tom Y

Sure! - Take it out!  You can then mail it to me at...   Seriously though, I am going to put one in my plumbing in the spring.

I installed one of these and have no tank. I think it works very good without a tank. It is just like city water quantity and pressure. After using it this summer I would would not concider installing a tank with it.

· For proper shut -off, remove accumulator in system. 

This a copy from the install page on sureflow instruction sheet.

When all else fails, read the instructions.

I called the factory when I installed mine and they said the pump would not work right if there is an accumulator tank.  They gave me the reasons, but I do not rememeber them well enough to repeat.

I started this thread, as Jack (Blue Goose) noted, after reading the installation instructions which state "The use of accumulators is not recommended with this pump. It is best to remove accumulator from system."  I have attached a copy of the instructions to this post.  I am going to hook the pump up without the accumulator tank and see how it goes.

Well if it is anything like mine you will be happy. We need to install a different shower head as this one will put out about five gallon per minute with this pump.

   I have this pump and I am satisfied  with the flow  without a tank, but it hammers and I can't seem to get away from that problem. Talked to the rep at the FMCA convention in Redmond OR, he wanted to come out to the coach and check it, but never could get together with him.    Good Busin'   Wilbur
