350 cummins

Hello All
Can anyone tell me if a older 350 cummins, the mechanical type will fit into a mci9 without having to extending the length of the bus. I have one in really good shape
in a 1985 cabover freightliner. The engine is in good shape and I dont use the truck any more. If it will also need to know if the 740 automatic will bolt to it. Would prefer a 13 speed which I also have one but dont want the hassel of having to come up with and installing all the stuff to change over to straight stick.

The NTC350 (one of the best engines ever made by Cummins, IMHO) is the basically same externally as the N14. It is a big block engine, and you will be able to use the HT740 with it. I know when I took out the 13spd and had the HT740 installed in my truck conversion, Man! what a difference. I wished I had that transmission all those years. The NTC350 can be bumped to 380hp and beyond, but for down dirt reliability-stick with the 350hp setting. It will give you many years of service. Good Luck, TomC

Generally speaking, T-drives (MCI, Prevost, Eagles, Dinas, Setras, VanHools) are RH and V-drives (GMC) are LH.

Yup what Bob said! In other words if the engine is mounted where the crank goes front to back it's a "T" drive, and if it goes side to side it's a "V" drive.

Yes I know the old cummins 350 is a good engine. Have put many hundreds of thousands of miles on one over the years. In happen to think about it in the old truck and wondered if it would fit in the mci without having to extend the bus. also did not know if the transmission would work without a lot of work and expense. While I have spent a lot of time driving the big diesel trucks never did I work on them. Have changed a few fuel filters,air filters and such thats about my mechanic knowledge. If I do put it in the bus, what would be your guess as to the fuel milage might be. I got a lot to learn about this bus stuff I feel a little lost on here with all of these experts on the board.
Its about like being a private e1 in basic training with the first sgt looking over your shoulder. So for aleast no one has yelled at me like he did.

If you kept the manual transmission, the NTC350 would get in the 7-9mpg range. With automatic more like 6-8mpg. Alot of the guys with Allisons just like to floor them all the time since they are so much fun to drive-that's the main reason they get worse mileage. If you accelerate more like a manual, then you'd be less then 1mpg off. The Allison, in general, always has about a 20hp drag over the manual. Good Luck, TomC
