. . . . . So just cleaning the filters and replacing the oil is NOT enough maintenance on these older buses.
My manual states that the mesh is to be removed for cleaning every 2500 miles. Of not, dirt will migrate past the mesh. Dirty oil will also leave dirt behind in the mesh & guess where it goes. Who knows what abuses these old girls suffered before we rescued them?

For example, the 'proper' service hasn't been done on mine in so long that I doubt anyone could get the mesh elements out of any of my buses without destroying the housing or element. Even most of the suggestions here don't mention the importance of cleaning the mesh.

When used as directed, oil bath filters have an established track record & loose no efficiency as they approach their dirt capacity limit.

See, there is no substitute for proper maintenance - except the possible exception of throwing money at it.  ;D

Before deciding on what filter to use, one needs to understand their application & the proper maintenance of the filter in question. Without a doubt, a properly sized paper element filter will work as well as an oil bath & be easier to maintain, just may cost more. I would think that if sufficiently oversized, replacement wouldn't be based on miles or pressure drop, but time since put into service. I'm gonna look into the most common/ cheapest filters & see what their specs are & chose from there if I determine the oil bath has to go due to space or airflow requirements resulting from the re-power.

Oh, BTW, I used to use gasoline to clean parts ~30 years ago & there was nothing better. Tried using gas a couple of years ago & was disappointed to see that the "new & reformulated" gasolines won't do much when it comes to getting grease off bearings.  :(

Clifford,

I couldn't agree more about the K&N and that is based on first hand experience.  Why is the foam such a bad idea?  I figure the K&N is just no a good AIR filter but what the device might be that it is filtering the air for seems not to be the point.  I don't thin it would be a good idea to use it for any filtering application.

I don't understand why foam would be such a flawless performer in the harsh environments I have witnessed and NOT be good for a 2 stroke D in less harsh environments.  I am humbly asking for more info here.....  don't misread my post.

Thanks,

John
