I was just down there 3 weeks ago. Did the reverse trip your doing. We stayed at the KOA in Petaluma which is 30 miles north of the Golden Gate bridge. Then headed down to Moro Bay.
I to was leary of driving the bus on the 101 through San Fran, so I drove in with the jeep to check out the route. Traffic was heavy lots of lights. I passed on that route and took the 580 to 880 and then joined back to the 101 in San Jose. Great route no problems.

Also I'm  not a fan of KOA but we couldn't book any other campground so we went to the Petaluma KOA . It was a great park we had a large corner spot. Kid friendly lots for them to do.
They also run a tour bus to San Fran, 8 hour tour. It was great.

I'm driving straight through in one day so It is I-5 all the way for me. No scenic side trips. Looks like about 12 hours so I'll be lucky to stop to eat! haha

Winchester House was bilt by and lived in by a woman that was under 5 feet tall and had really bad hips.  Being filthy rich she built her house whatever way she wanted.  I don't think there is a stair in the place that is more than a few inches high.  I am a serious gimp and it was doable for me.

I would really like to take my kids to the Winchester House (though my son is on crutches and switches back and forth to a wheelchair. He can climb short stairs with ease by "hobbling" up them) I haven't ever been their but it seems like something they would enjoy........ if I can get by the stair thing.

By the time you get to Reedsport I think you might be full up on coast road.  Maybe not???  It is at Reedsport that you turn right for Eugene.  I want you to have all the options though.  I can easily pick up the refer in Rickreall so wory not.  Also, if you want the take out you need to swing by on the return leg.  Nobody mentioned Crater Lake.....why is that folks?

JohnEd, which bus did you buy, the Prevost or the Eagle?  You never said.  I know you were interested in the Prevost, but then I heard it had problems even though it looked real nice and was at a pretty good price.  The Eagle I don't know about.  Always thought your preferences were toward the Prevost.

usbusin,

My preference is toward the Pre.  I think the Eagle is a solid platform but can gave problems that a Pre can't.  Surely I don't have all the data but this is my take:  An Eagle or Pre or MCI could all be my choice and it depends on the quality of the build and the condition.  Because the Pre is factory insulated with foam, and given that foam insulation is one of my critical items, the Pre shines without going further.

That Eagle for $29K was possibly an outstanding opportunity.  Its history for the past few years was not known without talking with the current(then) owner.  I called him right after hearing from Clifford but it was sold.

I  haven't purchased a bus and most likely won't till Sept of 2011.  That is when wifey retires almost for certain.  Always looking, though.
