generator question on onan

I've got an old onan in my 1978 revcon, it's worked flawlessly over the years and is still running great but I was looking at the tag on the side and it lists the model as 5.0CCK 3CR/16000U, the wattage is 5K and it lists the amperage at 20.8, that didn't surprise me but I looked closer and it says 120/240 on voltage, I found that interesting as it appears to have the ability to also kick out 220, any ideas or suggestions? I'm curious about how to access the 220 side of it and what it would all entail. The revcon is set for 30 amp hookups now and I'm tossing around the idea of using the onan on the skanee house instead of my 3000 watt honda.

Cody, LOL just traded my 5.0 for an Honda EM5000. I think the onan has two 120 hot legs and should be fairly simple to convert over to 220, I just don't know how It is done, but can be done. I swapped for the more portable honda cause it is easier to manage while we go thru the de-construction phase on the Iggle

The two hot legs is what I was thinking it has, on the remote panel it has 2 fuses so that made me think it has them, what I'm doing now is running my little honda 3000 inverter generator thru a hot cord with male ends on both ends to the 30 amp rv outlet on the house and I've got a jumper on the house breaker box that ties both legs on the house together so I can power both sides of the box, that way I can use the house lights, refrig and any outlets ( coffee) lol, don't panic, the house is not on the grid so I won't fry any lineman and the power setup is heavy duty enough to handle what I'm doing lol.

I don't have my Onan manuals with me, but I know there are 4 wires coming out of the generator head. depending on how these wires are connected, you can get 120 only, 240 only or 120 & 240. Maybe someone will post the schematics. If wired 120/240, each 120 leg will be 2.5 KW, if wired 120 only, the 1 leg will be 5 KW. On my PowerTech with 2 circuit breakers installed at the factory, I was told to put a jumper between the 2 breakers on the input side when wiring it for120 only output. Jack

It looks like those units are either 120 or 240 both not reconnectable. If yours is 240, you should be balancing the loads on each leg.

Cody, Jack is right..your unit is flexible as far as the output is concerned. Unless you have a need for the 240V in your panel the most logical way to connect it is straight 120VAC..that way you don't have to be concerned about balancing the load across the two windings. The CCK familly is noted for its' endurance and long service life.

I appreciate the information, looks like I've got good options to choose from, I know the generator is a good one it's been a great runner as long as I've had it, I bought the revcon in the mid 80's and the only thing the generator has wanted is a couple of plugs now and then and clean oil, it's been a flawless runner.

Yep, ned, I was hoping that bob would see my question, it seems we have the best of the best here on the board, doesn't matter what the problem is we have people that know the ins and outs of it, we've very lucky to have the type of quality that is here, as far as the slight sewer misfortune, I'm afraid I may have had a hand in it, spade bits seem to grow in my toolbox lol.

Cody; On mine when I take the cover off the connection box on the onan, It has a wiring diagram on the cover. Quite a suprise that they were thoughtful.

cody, is there not a schematic printed on the inside of the control box covers?

Every one I've seen has the schematic for swapping the 120 or 120/240 leads inside.

A bunch of us re-wired a little 4k at a bus rally for a busnut. Lots better on the straight 120, you can get all you've got without worrying about circuits. Of course, the project took a lot longer with all the talking than the actual job....
