Power Steering leak

I need more help with our 1990 Prevost, 8V92. During a spring break trip I lost almost two quarts of power steering fluid. I didn't notice a problem until we pulled out and had no power steering. After adding the Dexron we made the 1,100 mile trip home. I did not check the fluid when I got home but about a week later found a puddle of Dexron under the engine. I believe that the power steering pump is leaking. I have attached a photo. The fluid seems to be leaking from a hole which has something inside it, and it appears to have a pin run through the "boss". Is there an "O" ring in there that can be replaced or is there something else I should be looking at.

Thanks,
John

John, that is the control valve on a Vickers pump it has a spring, valve, o ring and a cap clean it real good before removing the pin use lots of PB and you may get lucky and can remove it if not you will have to take the 4 bolts loose and break the pump down to get it out fwiw I never get that lucky lol

good luck

I misplaced my vickers section but to the best of my memory it is like Clifford said just normaly a o ring .odd though it leaks without pressure;while just setting...

Thanks everyone for your help.

It was the "O" ring. My build sheet shows I have a Vickers VTM 42 pump. I ordered 3 of the $.91 "O" rings from Prevost before I took it apart. When I attempted to take out the pin I found it was broke in two pieces. I eventually got the pin out along with the cap with the "O" ring, the valve and the spring. I ordered 3 pins @ $1.88 each and also ordered a new spring, valve and filter. I tried numerous times to get it all back together but I could not force everything into the hole far enough to get the pin in. I took all the parts out and bumped the starter. That did the trick. Everything went in and I eventually got the pin in. I am too big and out of shape to do that on a regular basis. It is a tight area and there are a lot of hoses and wires close to the pump. I looked at the MC8 and it is a lot easier to get to, for what that's worth.

Thanks,
John

Hi Robert,
The part jok is talking about is the pressure relief valve. When the o-ring is bad the oil still leaks because there is a passage to the reservoir and if the reservoir is mounted higher than the pump, as it is in our MC8, the gravity pressure will cause the leak. I recently replaced the leaking o-ring in my pump and it REALLY leaks with the plunger out.
Good luck, Sam MC8

I understand now it was in a non pressure area and gravity leaked..good to get these things straight in my head for future.. Bob
