I have read a couple places about a V730 Automatic that was a four speed. Is anyone familiar with this? Or was this a misprint?

Thanks,
Bryan

Hartley

It is a 3-speed with a lockup torque converter.

V = V-Drive
7 = 700 series
3 = 3-speeds
0 = I don't remember but it's not overdrive. ( maybe the torque range?? )

Makes people "think" it's got 4 speeds.

1- Hydraulic
2- Clutch + Lockup on some
3- Clutch then Lockup ( seems like 4 shifts (3) )

2nd Gear and Reverse Gear uses the same clutch pack.

If reverse fails, You will also lose 2nd gear.

My MCI has an HT 740 so it's a 4 speed, 700 series, heavy duty

That's all I got....

Dallas,

That is the way I understood the V series transmission. 730 =3 speed, 740 = 4 speed and so on. I just read it over the last couple weeks again. So was thinking I missed something  ::)

I will let it go now. Man why did they not make a 4 or 5 speed for the GMC's????  ???

If you have a shifter for the V730-like 3, 2, 1, N, R, rather then just F, N, R, then you can really use the transmission.  The regular shift pattern is 1st converter, 2nd converter, 2nd lockup, 3rd lockup-this is why they sound like a 4 speed.  By pulling the shifter down to 1st- floor the engine till it hits the governor and then pull up about an inch on the accelerator-you'll feel a small bump and you're in 1st lockup!  This is really good for going on mountain roads-like our 80 miles through the Sierra Nevada mountains last summer.  You can have 1st gear lockup to go up a long grade, and 1st gear lockup to come down a long grade.  I'm really happy with my V730-although it would have been much nicer to have another lower gear so I could have geared it higher.  I cruise at 58mph which is 1850rpm.  Good Luck, TomC

with my 24.5 tires / 4.10 differential -
coupled to the .88 final gearing of my V731 -
I'm extremely happy with my 65 mph at 1850 and 75 mph at 2150 -

all this yields almost 10 mpg in a

If you ain't part of the solution, then you're part of the problem.

So Tom could you also lock that tranny up in 2nd for coming down a grade too?

I had heard of that a while back and another 4905 owner mentioned it to me earlier today. Anyone have the book on how to do it?

Bryan

TomC

Yes by pulling into 2nd, you can also have lockup for going down a hill.

Bill Teal I don't think is still around.  I've tried various times to get hold of him-no go.  Good Luck, TomC

I had sent Bill Teal an email a few months ago. He responded and said he no longer had the info on the procedure.

If you are serious about it, go over to that link on BNO and fire an e-mail to Bill Gerrie.

BW,

I did go to the link and read Bill Gerrie info. Is he still around? I know there are a few people that have the info. I would probably need all the detailed instructions on how to do it as I am not real familiar with how it would go together. I will see if I can email him.

Bill is still very much around

Bill Gerrie is still around. He might be away as he hasn't posted on BNO for awhile.

I have collected all the necessary components to do the modification except I collected them in the wrong order.

The cost to purchase Bill Teals instructions were pricey I can't understand why he would stop selling them unless it got to be a real pain talking to all the people that was considering the modification.

As I'm sure no matter how well something is written up we all have Questions.

I ended up going the 4:10 rear end and the V730 tranny with the Stone Bennett shifter.
