4104 history!

   Hey guys, found a 4104 here in my home town  in a barn today, talked to the owner in Florida and he wants to sell it and I told

  him I'd take it .   Does anyone know the HISTORY of  it?  here is the NUMBER ON THE PLATE  4104-3048  OR it could be

  4104-3046.

The 4104 is a great coach, the correct serial# is located inside the front(under the driver) as you open the door its wrote in front of you on the wall;

Hey John4104s,

  The original plate in the entrance on the dash had that number, it was hard to look at because the windows had some dust

  and the lighting wasn't the best!

    Hey Roadrunnertx,

    Thank you for the info, a Ky bus.   I noticted that it had Culver Military etched on the front from the decal and Grayhound.

   What year is it  I forgot to ask! The owner said that the engine was rebuilt in 97 and less 2500 miles on it   from the local DD

    here in Indianapolis and the papers to show for it.  His wife passed right after that and it has been off the road since.

4104 is a great bus, and its future is almost in your hands. Hope it comes together for you.

   Yes that is the answer, sad to say.  The only thing it needs is a new paint job, and very little TLC.  On good thing about it, he

   started it once or twice a week.

Both of those VIN numbers you gave for the '04 were delivered new in December of 1957.  They were part of a 100-bus order for Southeastern Greyhound.  With a little number crunching, I come up with fleet number M-1335 for #3046, or fleet number M-1337 for #3048.  As was mentioned earlier, to confirm the VIN from outside the bus, open the exterior compartment underneath the driver and look at the "frame rail", which is actually the wall of the spare tire compartment.  You'll see the VIN stamped into the metal: PD4104-XXXX.

Southeastern Greyhound's offices were in KY, but chances are very good that this 4104 saw revenue service all over the SE part of the US.

Oh, and starting it once or twice a week, without getting behind the wheel and driving it, is actually worse for the 6-71 than just letting it sit.  Just think of all the unburned contaminants in the oil alone!

Thanks to RJ we have the Southeastern Greyhound Lines fleet numbers.
When these 4104 were new they were in a pool of 4104's that ran from St Petersburg,FL to Chicago,IL.
I recall these old 4104's very well.
My dad was a Greyhound driver and his trip was St Petersburg,FL to Tallahassee,FL and the M-1300 number series coaches were the ones that he operated in that era.
I bet with out a doubt that he has driven this PD4104 that you have located.
They were top of the line coaches back in 1957 and through the later 50's and early 1960's.
Of course they were lavatory equipped and one option that they had was windshield washers new for the 4104's on that era.

   You are right, that one indeed has windshield washers. Maybe your dad was at on time the pilot of that one!

I recall this photo very well as I was the person with the camera.The photo was taken Nov 1964 at the old Greyhound Lines garage in St Petersburg,Florida.
FYI the garage was across the street from the baseball stadium parking lot.A federal building is now in it's place.
Those were some fun times back then I was 22 years old single and in the USAF and I thought I had the world by the tail little did I know!
