I have a 1980 GMC H8H649A (4905 type) S/N 193. I live in Indiana and our BMV has a new system for figuring our excise tax. They want to know what this bus cost new. I have not been able to get any information from GMC and I don't know where else to look. Can anyone help. Thanks. J BRZA

Run as quickly as you can, michigan has a simular system but with a cut off date, up to a certain year, I think it's 1984 they go by weight, after that they go by determining what the new price was, do what I did, mine is a 1981 iggle, I went and got histerical plates for it, cost me 30 bucks and are good for 10 years, I even got my handicapper sticker for them so I can still get really good parking places at wally's.  Just look at it like it is money you're spending, the state wants you to tell them how much you have so you can give it to them.

Now what would it be worth without over the road air, or seats, or heat or.  I think that should depress the price by as much as you dare.

Spend as little as you possibly can cause you will not be happy with what they do with your tax dollar.  Minimize your future heartburn.

Let us know what you do and how much it costs you....unless that would open you up, understand?  This is a "party" line.

I was tickled pink when I went to the DMV here to register my bus last july. It cost me a whole $62.00. And when I hed to renew in Dec. because it was pro-rated from July to Dec. (you keep your plates here) The renewal was a whole $22.50  ;D ;D.

What a hassle. Seems to me that THEY should figure it out for themselves! If that happens in my state I'm going to be very proactive on fighting such a ridiculous law.

Hope you get it sorted out before losing any more sanity.
Cheers,
Gary

Can you register in another state?  When I retired i registered all my rolling stock in Oregon while I was passing thru.  Now I intended , at that time, to return to Orygun within a few months.  I stayed gone for three and a half years cause I picked up my Father as a dependent and it took that long to uproot him from Pennsylvania.  I purchased vehicles and sold vehicles in that time and I did business with Or. thru the mail.  I saved more than  $550 dollars by leaving Kalifornia and Orygun seemed to welcome me.

Just a thought,

Sounds to me like you're just running into a clerk who doesn't know how to wing it. Just tell them you don't know, it's 30 years old and you have no idea how to find out. There HAS to be an alternative procedure for them to follow. Besides, anyone with a brain (BMV doesn't hire brains for counter clerks) can figure out that in this case the excise tax is going to be $50 from this chart: http://www.in.gov/bmv/5067.htm.

Bottom line will include other fees, depending on how you're registering the beast and what county you live in: http://www.in.gov/bmv/4954.htm.

Generally, the state DMVs have databases that list the MSRPs or base values of all cars and pickups going back for a number of model years.  There is probably no such database for buses.
