It could be done, but with road spray it is pretty hard to keep the electrics dry on it, even with a tight wrap it still seemed to get everywhere.I'm also giving some thought to using a sheet of 1/2 inch pressure treated plywood and hingeing it in the middle lenghtwise and using angle iron for stiffeners and guides for the edges too, lots of ideas flowing along with the coffee lol.

Cody,

What is the Make, Model and weight of the chair? Glad to hear Libby is feeling better.

Bryan, I don't have any idea of the weight of the chair but it's a Jazzy 600.  I'm thinking the best option is to make a ramp using that sheet of plywood with the hinge in the middle, I measured the opening with the topper liftgate open and the tailgate down it's 40 inches, I can get the chair in it with the seat folded forward so the only problem now is to get the chair onto the tailgate and I'm thinking the plywood with angle iron stiffeners will do that, I just have to come up with an idea on pinning the ramp onto the tailgate to keep the ramp from sliding and dropping.  I'll need to find a 6ft heavy duty piano hinge that I can bolt the 2 plywood halves together.

... i've got to design a catapult or a lift to load my chair into the truck for her, that'll also involve getting a taller topper for the truck cause mine is only cab height

Cody, what kind of truck do you have?

Len, I've looked at those but the topper would have to come off or I'd have to get a taller topper to use it,   Craig, I've got a Dodge Ram 1500 4x4, it's got the 6ft box, or the close to 6ft box that dodge has lol, why don't they make all 8ft boxes the same size and all the 6ft boxes the same size lol. I was just outside poking around in the garage and I found some inch and a half angle iron left over from the rebuilding of my bays that can work as stiffeners for the plywood, so far I've got the plywood, got the angle iron, now if I can find a heavy duty 6ft piano hinge, and someway to keep the ramp from sliding off the tailgate I think we'll have the problem solved lol.  I've also got to come up with some kind of traction material thats lightweight for the ramps too, probably some kind of small size expanded metal just to keep the chair from sliding lol, looks like a trip to Menards tomorrow before I pick up libby lol.

cody

Yep it DNR green lol if I had a state seal on the door I could make some ticket money on the side lol.

Cody,

Would one of these work for you?

I built a simple metal crate that I could put my shop wirefeed welder into so I could lift it up into my bus with my engine hoist. I would think if this lift has enough clearance, you
could easily build a cradle for the chair to lift it in and out. Clearance with the topper will the issue, but you might be able to build a platform off the rear of the truck (bumper of hitch mounted)
that you can set the chair on first, then move it into the truck.

Just some brainstorming thoughts.

Ok. Bummer. I have a raised topper on a Chevy 1500 I was going to offer to give you,  but it's 8 ft bed.

Here's an idea... take your topper off. Build a simple wall around the bed out of pressure treated 2x4s and pt plywood. Bolt it to the bed, and set the topper on top of it. Simple roof raise!  :D

If I can do the ramp, I may not need to go with the raised topper, just got to find a hinge now for it and some kind of hooks to keep it in place.

Glad to here your problems have changed to just transporting a wheel chair. If you all ready have a platform for your receiver build a 5 sided box with the 6Th folding down to use as a ramp it can be sealed and isn't as high as the bed of the truck much easeaer to lode and unload

Cody,
Paula & I are overjoyed that Libby is coming home tomorrow.  For lightweight traction material, what about some coarse sandpaper or non slip adhesive backed stuff they sell for running boards, etc.?  If you put a piece of angle iron on each side of the folding joint with the 2 angles together and bolt several 4" butt hinges to the 2 pieces of angle iron?  Jack
