DNS from Directv Operational!

Thought I would pass this along.

We subscribed for DNS from Directv two weeks ago, sent in the form along with copies of our TX registration and Wahlah, BAM! We are now able to have either feed, east or west. We are very Happy Campers now!

We have had that ever since we started working on the road. We get fox, abc, and nbc east and west coast. They wouldnt let us have cbs though. I guess the local networks have to sign off and give permission, and they say that cbs is always a pain. Where we live, we dont have local tv. CBS is about 30 miles away, but we cant get it even at home. But they say we could, so, they wont agree for us to have it. But, we love getting the others. If I miss something on east coast time, I can catch it later on west coast. Pretty cool.

We get all the locals, the only reason for the DNS is so my DW can record her favorite show on ABC to watch later. She works during that time on Sunday nights. I'll have to check the CBS channel, I didn't pay any attention to it when I checked our account and flipped through the channel search.

Paul, whats DNS, we have direct tv and took a reciever and extra dish when we went to BKs rally and got really great tv after figuring out how to aim the dish lol got help from some of the other sattalite guys there, now it's not so hard for me to aim, we've got that huge oval dish with all the eyeballs on it cause we got the hi def package at home so I bought another of the same dishes for the road.

DNS is a service you have to apply for and be approved. We got it when we started working on the road. Not all get approved. I like it cause I have a dvr in the bus, and record what I want, and even if i miss it, i can schedule it west coast. We are working a lot when my shows are on, so, i can record them. I also like that I can watch local california news and new york. Pretty cool. I dont pay for the local channels at home, we are not home enough to pay for it, plus, they told us if we get local at home, they take away the dns.

DNS stand for Distant Network Service. We wanted to be able to view ABC, CBS, NBC, CW and FOX where ever we are, and that is the only way to do that. I checked and we do get the Fox e/w feed along with CW and ION.

We don't qualify for DNS because we subscribe to Local. We used to have DNS until we opted for the local package out of Eugene, Or. No matter where we go now, it keeps us up to speed on what's happening there, which is important to us. FWIW

We also get cw, but it cost another dollar fifty or so a month.

I want to get the sat for my RV. Is there any distinct advantage with Direct over Dish? I want to take this with me to quartz site this Jan.

What should my story be to get the major network channels? I will be keeping the service to the house and have a separate acct for the RV.

John, Get a dome or a portable dish. Get set up at your house and take the receiver with you when you travel. If you have two accounts, it might be double in cost. We use Directv, find out what your neighbors use and go with that. I have always had great service with Directv, even when we have moved several times. Also had no problems when we moved into our coach full time. Winegard has a new dome out, that is pretty small. It can be set on the ground or mounted to your ladder, cost is about $775. A protable dish is much cheaper, but then you do all the work in finding a bird. Get your service figured out then get your RV dish/dome and when they come out, they will hook it all up for free. There is no cost for the receivers, just a monthly rental/maintenance fee.

Lots of ways to go, depending on your budget and use.

I was going to leave the Dish system at the house for the wife while I was gone. She now says she will have no use for it while I am gone. Sooooo, I will take it with me to QS. I guess I will need a spare dish as i don't want to screw the one up that I use at home.

Thanks for your advice. $775 isn't on the menu this year. I will set it up manually.

John, you ought to be able to find a spare dish at a yard sale for cheap, or ask your friends if they have one sitting around that you can have.

Good suggestion. Ebay is thick with them. Good prices and low shipping on some. Others are making a killing on the shipping, evidently. I need to find out what "series" dish I need. Got way to many choices....300, 500, 1000, 1000.1...1000.2 etc.

I keep read about Hi Def needing a new type of sat or dish. Anybody understand that? Is my 2 year old system capable of receiving HD? I will call them on Monday but I though some of you might have inside info.
