Very interesting article. 

While it was published in 1999, it really avoids discussing modern technology (electronic engines - both 2-stroke and 4-stroke).  It also does not discuss the 4-stroke engines we would use in our larger buses.  No mention of Series 60, or Cat and Cummins engines in the 12 liter range.

One of the things that struck me was that the author favored 2-stroke engines and stated that they had higher power.  I think he also alluded to higher torque.  Also more power at lower RPM during the spooling up process.  I think that there would be folks who would argue that point.  I think that comparison of the 2-stroke to MODERN 4-stroke engine would favor the 4-stroke on  both power and torque.  Also, consider that in boating that COOLING is not an issue, so you can really pump up the 2-stroke.

While the article says that it is comparing two and four stroke engines it concentrates mostly on the two stroke. 

Never-the-less, it is a very good reference article.
