8V92 when changing oil I found a piece of metal stuck to the drain plug. The piece is about the size of cornflake (cereal)  10 thousands thick and 1/2 inch rectangular.  no change in oil pressure or engine noise. Plan on cutting filter apart to ck out..All comments appreciated.

My comment? Ouch...bummer.

Hopefully it is nothing. Sorry, I am not a diesel expert. I hope that it is nothing...

God bless,

If you have any of the drained oil left, have it analized, it might help determine the origin of the "flake".  Jack

Check with  your local DD dealer or a local big truck dealer such as Freighliner, Volvo, KW, or a CAT or Cummins dealer.  Jack

Busted Knuckle

Bob, Just north of I-64 on 41 isn't there a Speedco right there in the clump of truck stops & wash?
If so I'd take it there they can give you an instant analyst. If not go to NAPA and get a test kit fill the sample bottle, fill out the label & send it in. They will send the results back to you usually 1-2 weeks.  FWIW Good luck, and don't be afraid to holler if you need a hand!

Busted Knuckle

OK Bob, I just did a google on Speedco and evidently they don't have one there by the Pilot & Flying J like I thought they did. Sorry. But NAPA does sell the kits or I know there is a KW & Freightliner dealer in Evansville. Also Clark has a DD dealer in Henderson, KY

Thanks for the info..I need to learn allot more about Detroit's... Was hoping not to have to learn to much :o :have built a couple of smaller diesels and tons of gas engines..one noise I have noticed is about what a idler bearing sounds like when bad on a car.

Busted Knuckle

Bob,
I just had a thought (I know scares me too!), how about taking a small amount of oil & the "flake" and going for a little drive and visit Clark DD in Henderson. Show them what ya found and ask where they get oil samples done.
I have dealt with them before and they have always been helpful & friendly even talked me out of buying parts I didn't need once! ;D  BK  ;D

There is a service shop up there by the flying J. I am not sure what it is or if they do oil analisys though. Blackstone Labs will send a sample bottle to your house and all the "stuff" to mail the sample back. Decent outfit from everything I have heard although I have never used them.

I just cut the filter apart.. not much there a few specks but I understand that is normal..Engine hold 40lbs idling cold and 22lbs hot....60 lbs fast idle cold and 55 lbs hot ....mechanical gauge..off to the detroit dealer I go. Do these pressures seem in line?  322thousand miles.

Only to share my bad experience.  I have an older Lexus and I wanted to get a baseline of what the oil looked like.  I had no problem and had recently returned from a 700 mile trip and needed to change out the oil.

I absolutely love driving this car.  Makes me young again.  Floored the puppy will bounce off the 6.5K RPM mark on every shift.  That is abusive to a car with 150K miles under its belt.  I drive it hard!!!  Only to give an idea of the service conditions.

I sent off my oil sample to the analysis center.  It came back with the analysis that I had a 20% D fuel dilution. :o ??? >:(  I sent the report back and simply said that the analysis was not possible considering it was a gas powered engine and had just run 700 miles. They sent me a correction and it said I had a 20% dilution of gasoline.  I didn't pursue that further.  The analysis kit came from the TA in Coburg,, OR and they use a lab affiliated with Mobile.  My kit was not labeled Mobile or any other corp name I recognized.  You might want to stick with the Cat and Cummins and DD labs.  I'm sure Mobile would also be good if you can make sure they are actually doing the work.  I had a long chat with the service manager up at TA but it had been some time since my analysis and he was dumbfounded, understandidly.
