Many thanks for your information & thoughts regarding the Lexan - especially the 'movement' and crazing issues which I had not considered. I suspect Gary's final comment  sums up the issue precisely for me, so I will try to stop thinking about how heavy my glass windows are and instead be grateful for what I have got.
