how much oil?

I have been following the debate over what oil spec's are in order for a DD8v71 however my question is, how many quarts are correct? I just did my first oil change on my "new" (to me) 1963 4106. I bought this rig in Jan 09 and have been making it road ready ever since. The Lubrication chart shows 22 QT. and the dip stick indicates 28 Qt. I've heard that "overfilling" is as bad as low oil. Can any of you more experienced folks shed some light on my question?

On our 8v71n it takes 7 gallons with filter change.

The reciept from the oil change the previous owner had done on mine shows 38 litres. but I think they were trying one on and didn't get caught. Thats 10 gallons...

That's the 28 Qts. I used to refill the crankcase including the filter. I have been told to run a gallon low but then I read that 22 Qt on the lube chart and became confused.

The sweet spot on ours seems to be just shy of one gallon, it stays there pretty close until my next oil change, next year! We don't run much, but I change it once a year for GP! Besides I like crawling under the bus!

Oh and I do have a few small leaks to keep the rust off!

Watching a show on RFD with 2 John Deere engineers, they were asked about oil consumption on a new engine. There answer was to fill the oil to the full mark and use the tractor all day. The next morning, check the oil. As long as it is above the add mark, use the tractor all day. The next morning check the oil again, and you will probably find it at the same level. They said every engine has an "oil level sweet spot" and as long as the oil is betwen the FULL & ADD marks it is OK. That is why many of the new engines dipsticks are stamped SAFE between the ADD & FULL marks. Jack
