Newb looking for bus conversion

G'day all,

My name is Steve, I am new to the whole bus world so please bear with my stupid questions.

I am looking for a bus conversion, I travel to race tracks to compete and spectate, my wife loves to come along but has health issues making travel in a car/truck difficult. The idea of a bus, with room to stand, use a bathroom and get a sandwich both encourages her and has inspired me.

Obviously I need a diesel to tow my race car. Also have a fair amount of support equipment to bring along.

I have been looking at a couple of 4104 buses which are supposedly in mechanically good shape and have the plumbing etc done.

What are you opinions of these classic looking buses for my needs?

Welcome to the madness. 4104s are great coaches, well built and relatively economical.

Unfortunately, their monocoque design and the manner in which the engine and transmission are mounted, means they don't have much trailer towing capacity. My understanding is that tongue weight should not exceed 300 pounds. Might not fit your needs.

Can the hitch be custom mounted to take more weight?

If not that would be a serious problem for my needs

It isn't the weight that prevents towing with 4104s, it's the construction. Big eggshell riveted together. A 60s Formula 1 car on steroids. A Cessna that never gets to rotation speed. No robust frame to transfer loads to.

Welcome to the madness and good luck on your search,

MC9's can have a decent hitch put on them, IIRC some came with a hitch to be used by trailways/greyhound.

I have seen a pretty substantial trailer behind the Featherlite Prevost with matching paint job.

Good luck and get it checked out before you buy, keep us posted.
