Anyone got a source for pop rivets and the umbrella caps that plug the hole. Had a bunch years
ago when my dad had this Eagle, don't remember where he got them. I got some rivets from the local napa
store but the caps don't fit. (do have a few caps ).

  Thanks Ed  ;D

Ed,

Jays don't look right. You hid your city so I don't know how far away you are, but they are available from Tacoma Screw. Order ALUM UMBRELLA CAPS FOR 3/16 ALUM OPEN END POP RIVETS 500pc.

I have a volume commercial account there and get a fair deal, my cost is $75.75 for the 500. If they need more info to get the right/same umbrella caps, my previous order # was KE33473, (American Container). 800.562.8192 They can ship in 7 days, (not a popular item), or faster if you want to pay blue for $29.00

Please forgive my ignorance but why are rivet caps needed?

They are for pull type pop rivets.  Seals the end and they appear solid.

Not like shaved head or solid like you probably use on aircraft.

Why not use Bulb-Tite shaved head rivits that seal without a cap?  They are still a pull type rivit like a pop rivit.

Why not just use a dab of JB weld to fill the hole?  Wear gloves to pack it into the hole and smooth it over.  You can do hundreds for about five bucks, and if you're painting over, you'll never notice any difference.

Always interesting to hear how a question gets answered!  Pop rivets with caps to shave heads to JB Weld!

Tell us where you are at and then we can direct you to somewhere close!

It is good to have options though, I gotta hand it to the board!

I am in the rivet business, so if you need something on the west coast or the Pacific Northwest I might be able to help.

Hi Dave
Do you deal in aerospace rivets? I do own a rivet shaver  ;D

J Byler is a good source, located in Texas and will ship anywhere.

We are in the trailer (big and small) business, so any type of fastener that is used in the construction or repair of trailers is what we have.

The shaveable head rivet by Olympic is a great piece, although nothing beats a solid rivet bucked into place. The funny thing about the rivet shaver is that the replacement cutting edge can cost almost as much as the tool. There are at least two different shave head cutters that I am aware of.

I agree Byler is where I get my rivets.  www.bylerrivet.com  I have used 500 "Bulb-Tite" Rivets so far and just ordered another 200 this morning.  (Jimmy Johnson 800-475-6792)

There are three sizes I've used 1/4" shank and 3/16 shank.  The 1/4 was for strength and where the holes were very worn.
I used the 1/2" heads for some, but actually the rivet heads below the roofline are all 3/8 on my bus.

I don't use the 'Shaving Tool" just my Dremel with a cut-off wheel to remove the stub and a quick touch with the face of the wheel makes it look smooth enough for me.  If I was riveting an Airstream I'd get a shaving tool, but since they are going to be painted or covered with molding, why spend the extra 200 bucks.  I generally put a dab of Sikaflex 221 around the shank just to make sure they don't leak, even though they come with a rubber seal.

Just a heads up folks regarding the shaveable head rivets, they are not always "strong" enough for all applications. So you might want to check them in a few months and then a few more months and look for tell tale signs of movement, usually some gray streaking or discoloration around them. They are great for many applications, but in some high stress applications they may fall short.
