4106 Power Steering Question

Hello,

I had the chance to drive a 4106 today, I'm looking at this to purchase, however the steering was almost impossible to turn.

For the guys that have one of these buses, is the steering like this on all of these? The owner said it was hydraulic. I have a

MCI-5B and you can turn it effortlessly compared to this one. Is this normal, and what do you have to do to make it better?

Any impute would be "GREAT"

Our '63 4106 had factory power steering (hydraulic cylinder assist). With engine running, I could turn it with easily with one hand, even when sitting still. It sounds like it is out of fluid or the pump is not working. Jack

Does it use Hydraulic fluid , or the oil type from the engine?

My 1961 4106 has the hydraulic steering and works okay when the engine is running. The power steering is actuated by a valve in the steering cylinder so there is some play in the steering wheel when you are moving but I have gotten use to it. They say a Shepherd Power steering works better with very little effort.

I don't remember, but it was either engine oil or ATF (Automatic Transmissioin Fluid). I never kept hydraulic fluid on hand. Jack

One of my 04,s has power assist and one has Shepard, I cant see any difference. Both turn while parked with one finger. The power assist takes engine oil. So your 06 has problems Pump $700.00 Hydraulic front cylinder $850.00 Approximately.

4106 was standard with the Vickers hydraulic assist system, usually wandering all over three lanes, It used light weight oil or ATF in a resivour and an engine driven pump. The existing lines can be used to refit with the Sheppard system and change to the high pressure pump, its worth the effort and the expense is not bad from
