Even at 70mph!
gets about 8 or 9 miles to the gallon (not at 70mph though)

Does it have a Mercedes-built body as well as the chassis, or is the body by someone else? What is the headroom like on both floors? It's certainly got huge potential, but a huge project as well - although if it's in running condition and the steel framework is sound then it's mostly cosmetic work.

Mind you, most people would consider keeping that XJS on the road a big project

Congrats on the bus. That looks like an incredible bus! I applaud you for undertaking such a huge project, and here I thought that our bus was a big project ;D.

I can't wait to see it converted.

That's beautiful, but the thing I'm not seeing is any kind of structural bracing.  I would think there would be a lot of flex and tin-canning . . ?

But wow, the potential!  Imagine 4 seats behind the door and driver (first 10 ft behind bumper), then the kitchen behind that (10 ft), 1/2 bath (4 ft), then a bulkhead and storage/tanks/water heater/etc.  Top deck would be the "vista lounge" (10 ft), front bedroom (8 ft), bath (10 ft) and master bedroom (12 ft).

Tons of potential.  The lower level looks like my '9.   Now I want a sunroom!   ??? >:(
Re bracing...I'd guess that MB has the chassis sorted out?   They don't screw up too much stuff.
I'll bet it is solid and drives well. 
Now finding parts could be a showstopper.  I'd make an effort to locate a set of front windshields.  Find them and get'em and keep them.   Already has American powertrain...this is good.  Now Americanize it further!    American axles, wheels, tires, and brake system.  This would enhance your opportunity to get the coach repaired should it, however unlikely, fail to operate. 
As has been said, look at Sean's Neo for ideas on layout....for the hot tub design, scooter storage...etc.
I'd love to see that thing.  But, 2 whole days away from me. 
Post some more pix!   Very interesting toy you got there.
You know, as I think about it, if you run across another MB, buy it for parts. 
I love the different stuff!   Anyone got on in North Carolina?

Something to consider- Sean with his Neoplan (1985) just had some suspension work done and it took close to 3 weeks to get done with ordering and locating the obsolete Mercedes-Benz parts.  Maybe consider converting the drive train to a reliable, easily obtainable American one using parts from both trucks and buses that are still in service with parts easily obtainable (that's what I'm doing with my truck conversion).  Your conversion is going to truly be a unique one, but will be nothing but a stationary house if you don't have a reliable drive train you can rely on.  Good Luck, TomC

To be fair it's probably inaccurate to describe the Sean's MB parts as 'obsolete' - in all likelyhood they are still being made, or at least stocked by specialists - it's just that most of those specialists are 4000 miles away.
