Ron,

A lot of coaches between yours and mine.  Mine is 1890 1963.  Hopefully RJ Long will see this and let you know more.  Meantime if you use the Additional options, you can place a larger picture on here that will help us to see your coach.

Here is my '06 undergoing muffler surgery!

Mark -

PD4106-2745 was delivered new in May of 1964 as fleet number 46 to The Short Line of Connecticut, based in East Hartford, CT.

I've answered this for someone else recently. . . I think this is the '06 for sale in the Atlanta area that's got the bad starter???  And a LOT of rust on the roof, of all places!

A good parts bus, IIRC.

Yes, it's for sale.  I have a friend looking at it today.  If all it needs is a starter and batteries, it's a good deal.  BUT, it does have to be drivable for at least 100 miles to get where it's going to stay.

The guy who owns it drove it from NH to Atlanta and parked it.  It hasn't been started in two years so you'll never know what you'll find.  Could be half eaten by mice.

But, it appears to be a sister of mine and is 108 off my serial number.

I'll know more this afternoon.

I have pd4106 2741 only 4 #s off of yours.  Mine was delivered to James River Trans in NC. in 1964. Nice tough old bus.

Is anyone maintaining a 4106 registry?  I wonder how many are still out there.

Mark,

I am not sure what engine that has, but the starter might be "frozen". This is just a thought to get it running, and it might be way of base, but here it is. Take a rubber mallet hammer (like the mallet that has the sand inside of it) and hit the starter, while somebody else tries to start it. (Of course your batteries need to be good to.) Sometimes beating on it can free it and it will then start...

If it does need replacing, I love our MT39. Of course ours is a S60, and you might need a different starter, but I love ours. Not to mention it is smaller and lighter. Which is very nice since MCI decided to put the engine computer right below it. They ran every cable they could in-front of the starter ;D :o ;D. If there were any wires behind the starter, it was because they couldn't figure out a way to run it in front. The MT39 was loads easier to install than the old Delco...

God bless,

John

My 4106 came with a spare starter, which I sent out to be rebuilt about a year ago.  I'll ship that down to my friend who is going to try to get it started.  The owner says he had a mechanic work on the bus and diagnosed a bad starter.  I guess he didn't want to spend the money on replacing it so he never had it running after driving it home from NH.

Who knows, it can be a total wreck but you never really know.  Hell, if it starts, moves, shifts and stops, it's got to be worth the price.  There a few things I want off of it, and then I'll part it out or maybe swap parts and sell it as a running shell.

John I would not recommend the MT39 starter to anybody that is a short life throw away unit on my trucks with the s60's I replace a least 5 a year on 20+ trucks after a years use I suggest you buy a spare and keep it with you because no one is going to have parts for repairs on the road.

John316

VanTare,

That is a surprise. We went to the MT39 since that is what our local charter line was using. They said that they love that MT39 and have it on all of their coaches. (When we are there usually about 15-20 at the shop, plus they have quite a few on the road all the time.) You have a great point about having a starter. We don't like to be broken down, so I like to carry some of the essential parts with us.

I could do some more checking, though. I know some guys that own other charter lines, and I could ask them and see what they think...

God bless,

John

John I own a Prevost with a D13 Volvo engine and replacing the MT39 starter is part of the preventive maintenance on it figure that one.fwiw that starter has constant power draw for the soft start any time the batteries are connected

Got a stick shift fishbol for free several years ago.  The lot owner wanted it out and no one could get it started.   I had him sign over the bus first then had my buddy come up to the Bronx with his tow truck.  Yeah, you guys guessed it.   One light push with the tow truck and we jump started it and I drove it off his property.  The lot owner wanted to "renegotiate" the price.  Too late.

Excellent reporting...

Find out WHY folks think whatever thing is great...

Maybe they are changing the starters out as preventive maintenance and like the MT39 because of price point? ease of replacement? they might not have a comment about long life, as they may change them out before failure?

Alternators and starters are way cheaper to just change out according to a schedule in your own shop/driveway than waiting for failure. Especially in time sensitive applications like people transport or just-in-time delivery. It only costs you the trade and your own terms for labour...no roadside bandits or laid up for the weekend waiting for parts.

Lots of places to trade in for a fresh one. I forgot to note the sale price for an MT42 trade in yesterday at the jobber.... and closed this Saturday afternoon. I'll try to remember to phone on Monday.

happy coaching!
