4106 Elec Speedometer?

When I bought my coach (4106 w/ Spicer 4 speed)  the PO told me he broke the speedometer drive cable when removing the tranny to install a new clutch.  Indeed, the cable is broken off where it attaches to transmission.  By the looks of it, the cable is pretty long and appears to lead to the center tunnel.  "Da Book" doesn't mention a mechanical drive for the speedo, only "electric drive unit [is] mounted on transmission and is driven by a short flexible cable" .  Does anyone have a mechanically driven speedo?  I guess I don't know what I have.

Thanks.

Onelapper, I believe that the early units used a short speedo cable from the transmission to drive an electric signal generator. Most now have the signal come from the left front wheel.

I would think that it would be easier to convert to the front wheel drive than repair your old one unless someone has all the pieces available that you might need to fix your setup. Ours already has this conversion because of an old broken cable.

Good luck.

One lapper, I doubt this will answer your question, but Here are a list from summitt racing of their available gear drive adapters....  This would take a gear driven speedo to an electronic speedo...

Tom and Turbobrat, thanks for the info.  I have yet to find a reference to the front wheel speedo drive in the supplement of my manual.  I'll keep looking.  If I can get my hands on the elec drive unit I can determine if the speedo works at all, then I'll have to decide which direction to go in.

Thanks!

i changed mine to the dixon unit which drives off the left front wheel, the long cable was too much expense and trouble, the dixon went on easy, there are many suppliers and different units avail

Frank, did you change to a different speedometer, too?  I'd like to keep the original if at all possible, it just fits in with the whole 'retro" feel that this old bus has.  But, that might change if I can't get it to work by testing it out.  I'm tired of using a GPS everytime I go out locally just to know how fast I'm going.

Thanks,

Mark
