Starting to wonder. Cracked liners and good heads.... Hope you didn't just lose a water pump.

A couple of good looking fellows there!

Do the rest of you not realize where Bob is getting this work done?

No need for conjecture, the problems will be identified, the appropriate, and I mean all of the appropriate checks will be made, and that engine will go down the road without trouble.

Easy to see how busnuts get overcharged in many shops, meddlers pay dearly for bothering the professionals with advice....

I'm with BW. Luke will not let him leave with problems. What bothers me is Bob you are being so hard on youself. Hell we all make mistakes till we learn better. Go easy on yourself. You Only know what happened now you will fix it and life will go on. Who cares about whose fault. Glade you are happy with you mechanic no matter what this board says ask lots of question. Educate your self. Your paying for it might as well rob some knowledge.

Well Bob, I for one think you should stay out on that ledge till you fully fess up. :P  You made a $12K mistake and that qualifies as a MONUMENTAL blunder. :o ::)  Do you have any idea how many "Hail Marys" this is going to take to straighten out? >:(  Sheesh! ;D  Trying to strike some balance here. ??? 8)

We are all rooting for ya Guy so if it makes ya feel better to kick yourself ehn you are down...well, kick away.

Seriously, what let the water in the crank case?  How can you overheat a 8V92 and NOT crack the heads?  Was the temp gauge off and by the grace of God you stopped and found the water in the oil that would have destroyed the entire engine if you had continued on?  Is this an incredible stroke of "luck"?

When you get time Amigo,

Bob,

Our prayers go out to you. We were all hoping for a less expensive result for a friend.

With the economy glooming and Christmas looming it certainly could have happened at a less difficult time, but then we wouldn't be call Bus Nuts would we. Probably be called Bus Pansies or Bus slackers.

I imagine most, if not all of us here,  have been in a place remarkably like the one you're in now. I remember writing a single check 5 years ago for repairs (brakes, turbo, compressor, fuel pump, water pump, injectors, tune up and more) on my 4905 for $21k. Man did that hurt.

All that to say, I have compassion for you.

The word compassion means "to suffer with".

We as a group are all there for you. Look forward to meeting you Bob. Hopefully this summer at a rally.

Thanks for the update by the way.

Look at it this way bob, to live long enough to use up the engine now you'll need to be immortal, long after the rest of us are sitting on the front porch of the nursing home, you'll be cruising by, some guys got all the luck lol.

Yes bob we feel for you but most of us have been in the same boat.  We learn to watch the heat guage before the oil presure guage.

I was in the same boat only i had to have both heads. Just did not have to pay the wrecker bill.

Look forward to jack's and meeting all

Like I said before, he is in good hand.

All the suggestion to check this & that, is already being done by Luke's experience mechanic.

Love the photo of Luke and his mechanic. Hi Luke you are looking great!

I came out this morning and found the 2 Bills starting to carry new parts down underneath the engine and emerge without them so that has to be a good sign.

6 of the pistons already assembed, skirts for 2 more getting warm

Putting the pistons together - a Jr. Mecano set

The block honed, liners fitted and removed, waiting to be matched to their pistons

And on the bad news front - while we were away Bill discovered a hairline crack in one of the heads.  So that likely explains our ongoing water loss.  And definitely raises the cost to get out of Luke's shop.    :(  :'(

The stark reality of a situation like this shows me that I shouldn't own a bus, that at my income level a bus shouldn't be in my yard, if anything like this were to happen I'm just not sure how I would deal with it, hopefully, my luck will continue to a certain degree for a while.

Cody,

Your Eagle would be a nice yard decoration, even if you couldn't afford to drive it ;D. I'm just glad that Bob's situation doesn't happen more often to bus nuts (knuts).

Merry Christmas,

God bless,

John

John, I can afford to drive it, I'm just not sure how I'd handle a 12K+ repair without some major financial pain and discomfort.

Cody,
It's easy..................... don't make any mistakes and you'll do fine  ;)
Just think you could be the first to make an engine out of iron wood  ;D

Bob,
Well mistery solved..........not that it's cheaper just no nagging questions.

  Hope your out before Christmas.

I know everyone worships this shop, but I would need to know a little more before I jumped in for a major. Around here, an engine with less than 150,000 miles is just going to get repaired and put back into service. I pull the pan, pressurize the system and look into the bottom of the cylinders to see what hole is leaking water. Then I pull that head and find the problem and fix it, head or liner, buy 1 head or 1 liner and some new rings and send it back across the country.

If that was my water pump, I would replace it based on the picture because it looks like it is leaking at the seals and with a 2 stroke pump the next thing that happens is the impeller falls off and the engine spits all the water out.

On the other hand, if a guy has extra bucks for a $1000 tow, then he would get the $12,000 inframe. Business is business.
