I am passing this on to you guys running the electronic Cummins a friend had a rebuilt starter installed in Jackson Ms on Thursday and Friday morning it would turn the engine but would not start, so after 2 hours of trying we had it towed to Cummins the problem turned out to be when the re-builder rebuilt the starter he bypassed the override sensor on the starter causing the ECM to short out costing him over 4 grand for a new ECM and Cummins told us this happening more each day and said never install a rebuilt starter from anyone but Cummins and when buying a new one never replace it with a different number on the starter because it will short the ECM out.

have a great day just thought I would warn you guys

And another fine reason to stick with a tried and true MUI 2 stroke Detroit. although, I do have to admit, I really liked my Mechanical Cats and my 855 CID Cumins engines.

Is this a problem with the Detroit Sieres 60? Will the same thing happen?

Thank You Wayne

Wayne,

I hope not. I really wouldn't think so, since I replaced ours with a MT39, and it worked great. Maybe I just didn't mess anything up... I don't know. BTW, what kind of coach do you have? Does it have a S60?

God bless,

John

Rusty; all the years i have been around the S60 never seen a starter short out a DDEC ECM saw one destroyed by lighting one time in the oil field. The Cummins Celect Plus has always had a few problems with moisture and corrosion,We have a truck with the ISM engine and we replace the ECM on it about every 3 months in the Houston area under warranty,my son is going have Cummins take a close look at the starter now.    have a great evening

Thank You all for the information on the S60.  John, The bus that gets me where I want to go is an 05 Eagle. The bus has a cummins Big Cam 400 in it. But I am in the process of building a model 15. I am putting a S60 in it and the reason for my question is when I got this motor it did not have a starter. I went to the truck parts store and asked for a starter and I was worried the parts guy might not know if I needed a special starter. But Thanks to all here sounds like I can put that one to rest.

Thank You Wayne

So guys, Does the starter have extra wires that go to the ECM? I have the Celect and I did not see a connection. Should I go back to the diagram? Or is the Celect Plus and later Celect models? Thanks Tom Y

Tom; it is the later models having the problems so i was told i am not that up on the Cummins electronics.

Rusty; i took a peek at the new Eagle you are building on the Eagle web last night, man that is amazing work you guys do but i  do have a question for you why do that type work on a 1994 model bus was it involved in a wreck.looking at the 05 in the back ground you own that 15 is going to be a work of art and a new bus

have a great day

Tom, my ISM (2000) does not have a starter override feature and therefore no issues with any starter.  I put my 24v DD starter on the ISM to replace the 12v starter it came with.  Works great and all it required was the offset ring to be transfered from the 12v to the 24v DD starter.  In any case, not all ISMs have this problem feature.

Thanks Brian. I didn't think I needed to worry but wanted to be sure. I have a extra ECM programed for my bus. It would make me sick if I had problems and ruined both looking for a problem. Thanks Tom Y

I'd be thinking the starter rebuilder is liable.

Rebuilt that starter WRONG.

happy coaching!

TwoStroke,Thank You For the kind words. Glad you enjoyed the website. No the bus was not wrecked. I wanted a 45' 102 wide. I guess I could have widened and lengthened an 8' bus but this bus came into my life as is. As you can tell I like Eagles. But they did some things I did not like. One is the dropbox and the other is the narrow front-end. I will change both of these things. This bus will probably be the last bus I do so I am trying to get it the way I want.
