Title: It is time....
Post by: Tedsoldbus on April 06, 2022, 01:44:09 PM
Sebula and Fred and others (like me) are "new guys". We watch this site with great interest since it is the best pool of guys that know buses. Old buses. I know fuel is high right now, but it is getting warm, the birds are singing, the roads are drying out, and it is time.
Time to juice up house and run batteries, check coolant levels, pull the oil dipstick, fire them up, and go break something.....
It is the only way we (the new guys) learn how to fix things.
In trying to do my part, I went to Florida last month and l only broke a water line under the sink. I will try again in May when we go to the the Florida Caverns. I will try to break something again in June when we go to Tom's River NJ to see the spoiled nieces and try make the route home through Vineland NJ to meet Luke (the legend). Also a trip to Evansville Indiana to see the Greyhound Terminal (Bob tells me it is now a hot dog stand? Say it isn't so,)
So I beg of all of you. Drive 'em, break 'em, and tell us about it....
Best regards and safe travels.
Ted

Good Question!!!

I am currently hanging out in the LA area trying to get my bonehead encounter with a fire hydrant fixed, looks like it might be six to eight week cycle.

Got to say as a northwest Seattle type guy I want to chase 70 degree weather around the country not 90 or 100 degree plus weather.

Even earlier today as the temperature and humidity start to climb I turn on the AC to not feel clammy.

Though after my sojourn as a snowbird here in the southwest I would probably think it's freezing if I flew home tomorrow (next week type of thing)...

I currently have 30,000 BTU of air-conditioning and with both of them running at full bore off of shore power; it does get me through the afternoon and early evening before I turn the white noise polluting devices off. (I can manage one air-conditioner off of good solar input)

Just dragged out my Bose noise cancelling ear plugs which have been kicking around for years in my technology brief case and plugged them into the laptop so I could consume video content from the laptop while the AC was running and actually hear something.

So hey what rallies would we be willing expend a couple of tanks of fuel to attend in the coming season? Alaska?

We wish Alaska was just a couple tank fulls!
If we do the trip this year diesel cost will be 9 grand.  :o

"I am currently hanging out in the LA area"

Is this Louisiana or Los Angeles?

You mention high humidity, must be Louisiana.

The LA Area hit 97 degrees today (which is significantly far from my desired 70 degree target) and I would be very, very scared of heading to Louisiana up until maybe October.

Though I would love to head Boca Chica, TX to hang out and watch the first SpaceX starship launch in June.

I learned big time from my tour in the Army that it's a heck of lot easier to stay warm then get cooled down!!!

My other big trip that I want to do this year is catch one of "Ron White's" last shows as this is the last year that he is going to be on tour...

Still curious, is this Los Angeles with the high humidity?

Los Angeles can get "muggy" but for those hardly noticable for those who suffer real high humidity. Calif is in a heat wave and upwards of 20 degrees above average. Sacramento has been running mid 80's when low 70's is normal. Going to be a very hot and very dry year again.

Lvmci,
That is why Evansville is on the list. Looks like a 5 or 6 hour trip the way I drive. We would also do Blytheville if they do an old bus parade but I don't know of any plans for one this year. Rita is a cave junkie so Caverns in Fla panhandle and in N Carolina are on the list. NJ will spank the fuel wallet but it is an annual event and I want to meet Luke in Vineland. It is the only long trip planned with fuel costs taking the fun out of it. I was stationed in Alaska 15 years Fred. Great place, highly recommend seeing it, but not on our list of "need to go there". I did both routes to Alaska a few times and unless it has changed in a big way: If you are trying to break your bus as I requested, the road up and back will do the trick.
Flx guys are doing their parade in Ohio this year so that is on the maybe list.
Pick a place nearby gang. Don't let fuel costs trap you in the driveway.

Its been very cool here also it was in the twenty's just the other morning. Still feeding the wood boiler once a day. We need some rain here and warmer weather. Normally we would be planting corn in three days here. Still shopping for buses.

They recently restored the old Greyhound station in Jackson, TN also. But it is now an UPSCALE eating joint called DOE'S Eat Place. Very good food, but a little more expensive than a hot dog stand.

Cheryl and I will be leaving for points east on the 25th, headed to Indy to see her aging Uncle Cloyd with stops in NM, OK, ARK, IND. We would like to make it to Hershey for the "Spring Fling" and then NJ to visit with my sister and Nick Badame @ Atlantic Custom Coach, Then on to NC to see more family and bring my Mom's ashes to her final resting place. Hope to cross paths with some of you nuts along the way! Currently in Mohave Valley Az where the temps have already  Exceeded the century mark (whew!). Our coach is as ready as ready can be and so our we since we started fulltiming last Sept.
Safe travel to all this season!

By the end of summer I hope to be mobile. My goal is to make the "Random Acts of Camping" rally in the end of September. Lots to do between now and then, we'll see how it goes.

Hey Bob. Dorothy felt the house began to twitch for a few hours last night. We are almost to the NC state line and all the genuine Wizard of Oz twisters were south of Atlanta (as usual). The mountains seem to break up the storms, but not always! I will take a few pictures of the bus barn when power company hooks up the big black wire dangling on the side of the building. Spray foam went great and passed electrical inspection so just waiting for the big white power company truck. Not moving the bus there until I have power.
Van (and others). Don't know where you will be in NC but I have a big concrete ramp with 50 amp and water if you need a "free" harvest host stopping point. Find Lake Nottely on google earth or maps and see if it is too far out of your way. It would be a good halfway point going south for Chessie and Buswarrior if headed to Florida. We welcome all BCM folks.
Jim, Rita likes the advertisement for random acts of camping. Let us know if you are going. It will probably get us to go with you. Two buses with tools always makes me think nothing will break...
And Rancher, just have Fred send you some of the 100 degree heat in LA today and hook up the planter..

Planning on it. Probably after Tom's River. The highway drops south right out of there and then cut west to Vineland. I'll probably have another small shopping list for him and tell him I will get it in person. Three BCM guys told me it is an interesting stop and he is always great on the phone. I'd just like to meet him. And we have a special bond. We are both married to Jersey girls....

Dave its been very windy up this way also the last couple days. Sixty plus MPH gusts yesterday little less today. Like you more wind coming next week. I wish it would bring in some rain. You must be down around Wamego KS. That's about 150 miles straight south of me.

Our crop rotation won't be changing we put our fertilizer last fall and yes it was three times the normally cost but because of chemicals that have been used and FSA requirements it tough to change your rotation up. So our bean ground last year goes corn and our corn ground last year goes beans. Any up swing in price we saw last year is long gone. We were dry threw here last year so some of the crops were good and some not so good. We need some rain or we are going to have a rough start to the growing season.

Hi Mason, yep we were at 68MPH all day yesterday and the Bus was a rockin, LOL watched them out the window spraying the fields around us Beans and corn they say. We see the big tank trailers with Anhydrosamonia going by and hooking up to the tractors. Things are starting to green up around here.

Rancher yep we are there. Nice little town and have friends in St Mary's where the wife is getting Liver therapy every other day. We go over to Manhatten twice a month to get food etc. Wamego is all about OZ and a lot slower than northern California where we we're from before we became Kansan's with plates on one of our cars because we could not get a smog inspection for Calif. So we registered it here. Are you in Omaha?

Yep next week they say we need to watch for tornadoes in our area. Oh what fun

We just watched the weather channel for a few since temps here tonight will kill the tomato plants. They did a segment on the University of Ga weather station that happened to be dead nuts in the way of the big tornado a couple of days ago. The stick measured 129 mph before it broke it. That is breezy!
My Colorado buddies and family ask if we worry about the twisters. I said yes, but one has to pretty much hit your house. And everyone around comes to help.
I worried more about Hurricanes when we lived in Florida. When a hurricane hits, everybody gets smashed and everybody wants help in a large area at the same time. And help can't get to you. I'll take the twister risk all day long over a Katrina.
Back to buses. Just put in the monster canister air filter Luke sent me. Made me Happy. Diesel down to 4.38 at Walmart here so guess I better go put in about 120 gallons in the morning.
Not happy....

No Dave I am just north west of Lincoln Ne on a farm. Almost straight north of you up highway 77. I grew up in SE Nebraska and my folks had a small truck stop and we ran trucks also so highway 24 and 36 in KS were major for us. I pulled a lot of loads of fuel out of Topeka Ks when I was a young man.

Tom's got over heated last year due to a bad cylinder I believe, we've got another engine coming together for him.
Not sure of my schedule yet but if we make it to Joysey yes we will make the rounds to Nick's and Lukes. Gary Benett is doing well and still at it in a retired kind of way, Busnuts always stay busy as you know lol.
Our coach is doing fantastic and running like a top we have done so many upgrades to this bus to bring it to another level, plumbing, electrical interior, all the things needed to suit our needs.
