Title: Conversion company in Las Vegas
Post by: Ajev on September 23, 2015, 12:58:46 AM
We just purchased a 24' Ford shuttle bus. We didn't realize we would have trouble getting insurance. We were told that we need to get a company to certify it is not used as a shuttle bus to be able to insure it as a personal vehicle. This bus is perfect for our needs. My husband is disabled and cannot sit with his feet down for long periods of time. It also has a wheelchair lift which will be great for a mobility scooter (or 2). Any help would be greatly appreciated.
We live in Las Vegas.
Thanks
Jan

Title: Talk To Other Independent Agents ...
Post by: HB of CJ on September 23, 2015, 07:38:30 AM
Do more research.  It is possible to find an agent who knows more about the insurance industry outside of their own area or company.  I do not know exactly what NV needs.

Also, in OR I was told the requirements are now mostly Fed, all one needs are permanent cooking and sleeping arrangements. Many cheap ways to do that to get the RV plate.

Some auto insurance companies can not or will not think outside the box.  Once you get that private RV plate, then doors open with other companies.  I used Progressive.

But ... and this may be important, I had a quote and a temp.  binder on my old Crown Bus BEFORE I got the ex schoolie tagged as a non commercial RV.  Had to have that.

I think, but am not sure, that your present source of info may not be completely correct.  Shop around.  Our agent has been with our family for many years.  Straight shooter.

Jan -

Sounds to me like you just purchased a "Class C recreation vehicle", not a shuttle bus.  It's all in the language, sometimes.

Do you have your personal auto insurance with a major carrier (Allstate, State Farm, Farmers, etc.) or do you have it thru an independent agent who handles multiple lines?  If you have it with one of the majors, you might find it beneficial to go with an independent agent, they often can provide better coverage at lower rates.  (And if you happen to be a [gag] AARP member, they've got a terrific program with the Hartford - but only thru independent agents.

But remember, you just purchased a "Class C RV!"

FWIW & HTH. . .

Jack, are you in the same state as the original poster?  I ask because my former insurer (Allstate) dropped my bus from the policy combined with my car after N. C. came up with some bonehead requirement for RV insurance about 7 years ago.  I went to Progressive and offered to move my car, house, "umbrella" and every other policy that I could think of if they'd insure my bus (especially never using the "b-word" -- always "RV-conversion-vehicle") and they absolutely refused; no way - anyhow would they insure my bus.  It will be interesting if they will insure a bus in Nevada.  It's a good chance that they refused me because of the same boneheaded foolishness of NC's insurance bureaucracy and Progressive's "no bus" rule might not apply in other states.

Progressive should insure anything the don't pay claims anyways,I broke both windshields on the Trek this summer on a trip in a construction zone caused by a idiot in a 18 wheeler passing in the zone.(new windshields)

I filed a claim they want me to pay the deductible on each windshields of 500 bucks ea for windshields that cost $750 ea and before anyone goes off about the coverage I have glass coverage is different from state to state all I was offered was $250 or $500 here every Insurance Co I called offered the same for the motor home

I went with Progressive for a lower yearly premium big mistake on my part lol but I not through yet.It sucks because the law in Az requires you to have a windshield with no cracks on the drivers side or you get a repair ticket

I have full coverage from Progressive on our Prevost in North Carolina. I do have $500 deductible for a windshield though. I just ordered and received a replacement from Prevost for $280 and free shipping and will install myself.

That's interesting, Tom.  I was on the phone with them for about an hour or so -- as I said, I offered to move all my insurance policies over, etc. but they flatly refused to offer me any coverage,  at the time I was looking for liability only - maybe that's the problem, or maybe they just didn't like my bus.  The agent on the line had to keep putting me on hold and going away to ask her manager questions.  After the final 10-minute hold, it was "no, we won't offer you coverage on that vehicle".   Oh, well, I have it with State Farm and it seems to be OK.

I have had all my insurance with State Farm for over 40 years, even had the Eagle bus covered with liability. But when I tried for full coverage on the Prevost, they wanted to charge me for the value of the coach when new which made the premium real high. I got my Progressive coverage through an Independent Agent and our Prevost was converted from new by Hoffman. Don't know if any of that made any difference or not.
