I have pulled my thermostat housing blocks, cleaned them up and painted them, pulled out the old thermostats (160's) and the seals and bought new thermostats (180's) to replace them. The problem that I am having is that the seals inside the housing don't easily pop back in. Is there a special tool to install these that I need or is there a secret unbeknownst to me to get these seals back into the blocks?
Thanks guys - Pics for reference -

Also - I bought the parts from napa - Here is the information page on them -

Are your OLD seals ("o" rings") square section or round like your picture seems to be??>>>Dan
Dan,
The old seals are round and are exactly the same size/shape as the new seals. The old seals were in tight. I had to use a pair of locking pliers to pull them out. I probably should have just left them in but I figured as long as I have everything apart and the new pieces, I might as well replace them.
I will probably end up taking the parts over to Covington/Clarke Power tomorrow as they should be able to seat them for me. But still curious if there is a special tool needed or if there is a secret method (1/2" pipe and hammer) to getting these rings to sit correctly.
Thanks.

I just did this job. I cut a 2x4 to fit. I then tapped the seal into place. Not to high tec. but it worked.

coat each "O" ring with Dow Corning #4, a silicone based grease that lubricates neoprene seals and "O" rings,, also makes them last twice as long. Used extensivly in aviation for this purpose.>>>Dan
There is a special installer tool but you can take a old thermostat and install those also
good luck
I use a 1" drive socket to drive mine in. I forget what size it is though... maybe 2 15/16"...?? Just keep trying them until you find one the right size. ;D

Did u get it? Btw why can't I see what utahclaimjumper is saying? His posts are blank?

I am with Tom on this one. I just used a large socket to get them in. Worked great.
RB
You guys do it with a 2x4 or a socket here I went and paid over a 100 bucks for the Kent/Moore tool lol but it works on Cummins or Cat also so all is not lost LOL

Scott,

The "special service tool" is probably cheaper than a 3" socket!! LOL! Besides, us country boys got to make do with whatever! ;D ;D
TOM
Understand , here I just grab the correct socket and bingo, no idea of the size, but I have the right one ;D
No biggie deal, you can install it IF you have some experience using a hammer and extension, say a 1/2" or 3/4" (most anything) either would work fine, just tap it down to correct point, make sure it is straight in the bore.

John,, I've been ignored by experts!!>>>Dan

John - This is what I am going to do today. Thanks for the heads up.

Cliff - Hilarious.
I was going to use the old thermostat to tap it in or maybe a pipe or socket but my skills with tools suck. I think with the 2x4 I have less chance of tapping it in at an angle or (knowing myself) would somehow manage to dent one side of the seal if I used anything metal to tap it in.

Don, I am sure they were much shinier. If I could bead blast them I would but cleaning by hand is no fun. I've sanded out the bore but I don't think I am going to do more than that...although I could say that I polished em up to a blinding shine but forgot to take pics before I put em back on.... :)
Thanks guys....the combined knowledge is amazing but the comedy that comes along with it is priceless.

I wonder what size socket people use to install the rear main and wear seal I have installed the thermostat seals with just a hammer don't like too but sometimes you have no choice
good luck
Use the right tool, and probably wearing a set of these might help. No pince, no stink, no sweat! lol

Slow day here also ;D
Clifford -
Here is the tool that I used. I don't think I'll be needing it for setting thermostat seals anytime soon so I'd be glad to sell it to you.
I'll let it go for 1/2 the price of the last tool you bought and freeeee shipping!
;D

Sean,
I never got around to checking those thermostats, but that explains why it ran cool in the winter time. :) I did replace the ones in the 8V92 this summer but that was during a radiator replacement. I replaced the seals the same way you did.

Clifford I have (somewhere) a Stemco tool I bought for a '68 Diamond Reo front axle seal that fit the last rear main I did. I never have any luck doing the wear seals. I try to talk some "expert" into doing them for me! LOL!
To tell the truth, I hope I never have to do much of that kind of work again.

Darn I could have made some money off mine like that. I guess I'm wasteful I think mine got burned up.
Glade it worked for you.

Tom - I just took the bus out for a run with the new Thermostats. I ran her(him?) for about 45 miles with the 180s and 100% water for cooling. I checked the temp with a gun and compared it to the gauge. The Gauge read 170 and the gun read 180 off the thermostat block. So the gauge is off by about 10 degrees. The old thermostats were 170s (I said 160's but they were 170's) and it seems if the gauge read 160 it might have been running right at 170.
The bus runs better at 180. Noticable difference. Less smoke on acceleration.

Yeah - dropping the water today to fill back up with anti-freeze. Just wanted to do a good flush this last day of fall before winter hits (supposed to freeze here tonight). Hopefully no aliens today or I'm screwed.

Glad that made an improvement for you.
Sean,
Glad it's fixed...Dan, I never ignored you. Not ignoring anyone for that matter..but your posts have magically showed back up. Weird stuff. I bet the aliens are messing with us.
