Been reading Bus Conversions for a couple of years now and have the bug.  Bought a 1962 PD4106 over the weekend.  Drove 13 hours to get to it and 14 hours home non stop.  When I got within 5 miles of home, I couldn't get her to shift out of 1st or 2nd.  Don't know which one she is stuck in.  Found a linkeage rod on the transmission had lost a coupling.  Put a bolt in its place, but still can't get her into neutral.  Any ideas?

Welcome Eddieboy!

It would help tremendously if you would put all of your coach info in your profile, such as engine type, auto or manual transmission etc.. Also include your location, you might have a busnut living in you neighborhood and not know it. You never know how many of our beasts have been changed over from one thing to the other over the years.

That way as you post, the information is already listed.

You might get a faster reply to your posts.

Enjoy, but whatever you do, do it safely! ;)

Not knowing what trans you have, I'll be generic here. I would start by taking the shift linkage off at the trans and find neutral with each shifting arm at the trans. In most cases each arm will have 3 positions. The center position is usually neutral. If that works then follow the linkage back to the shifter and adjust accordingly. I hope this helps....Cable

If you have a 4-sp manual;

There are two levers on the trans to which the two shift rods connect. Have someone hold in the clutch and move one of these levers back and forth so you can feel the center. It feels like a detent. Then move the other lever so they are both even. This is neutral.

You don't need to remove the linkage to do this unless the linkage is broken or stuck.

You then should be able to move the inside shift lever into any gear you want. Always push in the clutch when trying to move these levers or the inside shift lever.

Sounds like a worn shift tower has hung you in 2 gears at the same time. You will have to learn how to square shift it. Use a pry bar on the rods at the trans and you will figure it out.

If this was a car I am sure it would apply but cause it is a bus it only "might".

Think of this as your shift stuff in the front has a kinda brain and detents for the right places.  Your trans is also like that.

You can set the trans in 1 and you might be able to push the shifter arms to 4th while it is in 1st.  The trans will now be locked up nd wont turn.  Moving the shifter it might seem like it is moving stuff but it isn't.  Take the shifter rod off the trans again and make sure the trans levers are both in the neutral detents.  NOW....push the rods to the front and back and find what seems to be neutral.....the rods should be near perfect aligned to the rods.  Make sure that your front shifter is in neutral at the start and when you finish connecting.  Don't laugh.....if this was a Chevy you would be on you way again but you would only have had to do this without disconnecting anything....just reefing on the shifting mechanism under the hood.  worn shifter stuff on the end of the stick shift and a missadjusted trans.  Betcha!  You should be able to get home but if it won't shift I would have someone move the shifter from 1 to 2 to 3 to and watch my trans levers move.

Then there is the possibility of you having thrown a shiftin fork out of the track inside the tx.  You need better advice than I can give with assurance.

You can move those levers on the trans by hand. I do it every once in awhile when it won't come out of third for a downshift.

My wife holds the clutch in and I go back and pull the stuck lever back to the center to match up with the other one. All is well after that.

what ever you do make sure the emergency brake is set, and or the wheels blocked real good as it can roll when you start shifting the trany.

go to local transit authority an buy a bus with a V730 automatic transmission and replace the manual one.  you can buy a whole bus cheap as long as you can scrap the shell.

Eddieboy,

Yeah, what did happen?

It is very frustrating to give out information and never find out if any of it worked!!

Sorry I haven't gotten back to this question.  I am still new and didn't realize that people would keeep answereing after I logged out for the day.  I messed a little with the little arms on top of the transmission and I got the gears back in order.  For your further info, this is a 4 speed Spicer on my 1962 Pd4106-1475.  The engine is a 8V71.  Thanks for all the info.  I will try to not leave y'all hanging in the future.
