 ???  I have been thinking about how to redo wiring in the back of this bus with out a box.  This is what I came up with?


Then I was thinking where to put it?  The old one was in the middle of the frame just above the back of the engine.  In the second picture you can see the angle that was the left mount for the old start panel.

I wonder should I put it where I can reach it from the out side?  It is not permanat just tacked in one of the screws holding the sheet up for now.  I mounted it there to see how it would work.  I still can't reach it very well from out side the bus.  But I am not sure if a person working on the engine would need it closer to the inside?


O hope you can tell a little difference in the bus now I have been working on it for several months.

Don't mount it where you would have to reach over belts and pulleys for safety reasons that are obvious.

If I mount it where it is in the picture it will not be any where near the belts on the engine.  and over the genset but not close enough to get into the belt on it.

Do you think it would be ok where it can be reached from out side the enige compartment?   I can always put the rest of the stuff any where on the fire wall behind the engine.

Thats the great thing about our buses, you can pretty much do what you please. It sounds ok to me.

OK, Bob, let me ask the dumb question, since I can't seem to find an answer in your original post:

What is this gizmo and what is it for?

Is it a remote start panel?

If so, don't re-invent the wheel as to location - put it somewhere where it's safely & easily accessible when you open the rear tailgate, not the side access doors.  The factory puts them there for service personnel to utilize while doing routine maintenance, should be no different for an RV.

If you're concerned about tampering, wire it to an ignition interlock up front.

I'd still cover the connections with something to keep the crud from building up on them, which will invariably happen with a rear-engined vehicle.

Make sure, also, that they're labeled for use.

I am sorry I did not make it more clear.   Yes this is what I was going to use to a remote start panel.

As for location I have no idea what any of the builders have done.  This picture below is what I had.  As you can see it is mounted straight behind the engine on the fire wall in the center of the bus.  With the wires all facing to the engine and the buttons facing the wall.  But all burnt to a crisp. 

I am hoping to move it some where that it will be better.  I was thinking just inside the side door on the street side.  Where there is an area that a mechanic can stand and work on the engine.  It is between the genset and it's radaitor, that's why the long tube from the top of the radaitor and the water pump on the gen set.

I don't want to re-invent but I have no idea how this is done on buses, what I had is all gone.  I was thinking i could mount the buttons above the top of the door level on the street side and run the wires back to the center of the fire wall to the components.  This way it would be where I could reach it from inside working on the engine and outside walking around and not have to crawl in the engine compartment.

I wish I were not having to re-invent it all but I am I guess from nothing but ashes.  I sure wish I knew what I was doing.  Hope I get it all figured out by Sept. 11 I want to take it to the deal in Sherman TX.

Bob, if you are putting it over the gen set radiator area, I think that would be safe, since I have looked at your bus. It would not be the most handy area, because you would have to move to side when working on engine. Mine is at rear, right above engine. Did you ever find what kind of bus it was? Big John

I could not see any reason to have it in the middle behind the engine where it was.  It was about out of reach from any where.  Putting it in the rear would be a Major pain.

I am still unsure of the make of this bus.  The pictures that you talked about are real close, about the closest I have seen.  There was one that was a artist's drawing that might have been it but left out some of the key items like the air intake it might be it but that is about the only thing that I have seen that was close.

Mine is an open panel similar to what you are building and it is mounted in the center, in front of the engine, just inside the tailgate.  I can get a photo if that will help.
