Today is a good day for mirrors

As I had posted in the past, I could not really see out of my right side mirror.  I tried using the adjustment advice, but it did not work for me.  I think that the wooden post added between the door and the windshield as part of the conversion blocked just enough area to prohibit the mirror from focusing down the side.  So, as noted in an earlier post with a Craigslist link to a guy selling mirrors, I bought two motorized transit mirrors for $25. each.  It took some adaption to fit them, but it was not too bad.  Also, this was my first really practical use of the Millermatic 200 that I got recently (part of the stuff I traded my old bus for) to learn how to weld.  I won't say that my welds were pretty, but they are holding.  A good weld is better than a pretty one, right.  Anyway, I fabricated (it is so cool to use that word) the hardware to attach the mirrors.  They are installed and seem to work great.  I mean as far as the view goes.  I did not wire the controls yet.  That is not high on the priority list.  I must say, I felt bad about disloyalty to the original MCI mirrors and think they actually looked better, a character issue.  Part of it is that the two side view mirrors now are not identical (the right one has a longer arm and is slightly different than the left).  However, having a clear view of the whole side area is a beautiful thing.

I suspect that after driving her some you will discover that you really do not want to see the side of the bus. That is the purpose of the spot mirror. (I hope you have one on each side). I always adjust the main mirrors out enough to see the oncoming traffic behind the coach.

It does take a while to get used to this but it really gives a much better view than if you have them adjusted so that you see the side of the coach.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body. But rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, a good Reisling in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming:  WOO HOO, what a ride

They both have convex mirrors.  The right one has it in a separate casing mounted on top of the main mirror.  Actually, these mirrors were mounted hanging down on the transits, but I have them upside down with the support on the bottom.  The left one has a motorized convex in the same housing.  I'm sure your right about playing with the adjustment, but I generally like to be able to see down the side when I lean a bit forward.  It gives me a good sense of what area is covered.  I also have wanted to be able to see how the right rear wheel is tracking on turns, and the old mirrors did not allow that.

Hi yo silver

Lin,
I like the way you write; ("Cool to use the word fabricated").  Also,
to Drvn. Ms. Lazy, I agree about the aiming of the mirrors.  Good point!
