your power steering system wil not know the difference.

but I do beleive it should be the same srtaight wt you put in the crankcase

I use multi viscosity (15W 40) in my 4905.  Seems to work fine, but I do get howling in the hydraulics for a minute or so on some cold morning starts.

Bab Steering in California, a rebuilder, says to use 15W-40 if the power unit is a Shepard. The service manual for a 4106 calls for type A fluid for the factory steering, which was the booster design. I don't know if the recommended fluid was changed for the 4905 booster system.

the pump should not care if it is mixed

HighTechRedneck

They mix fine, whether in the power steering system or your automobile crank case.  The resulting mix will have viscosity properties somewhere between the two depending on the mix ratio.  It's not a "best practice" but it works fine.

I have Sheppard steering and use 15W-40 in it and also get some whining when cold and faint whining when warm.  I also use the 15W-40 in my generator, car, pickup truck-it is the best multi viscosity oil made.  My Mercedes-Benz independent mechanic uses it on all of his older cars after the engines are out of warranty.  Good Luck, TomC

I've been using Dextron in my original 4104 steering booster system.

Is engine oil better than Dextron?

I don't get any noise when it is cold but Dextron is pretty thin.

We have the power assist in our 4107.  It came with who knows what in it.  We thought it was power steering fluid and added some,  yeh we were a little dumb, and it boiled out as soon as it got warm.  It didn't look like motor oil so we have been adding hydaulic fluid to it.  It seems happy, doesn't boil it out or howl, except when real cold.  Should we drain it and use motor oil?

In general-if you have a Sheppard box, use 15W-40 engine oil.  If you have a Ross or other, power steering or automatic trans fluid.  To make sure, either read or ask your mechanic.  Good Luck, TomC
