MC8 Engine shut down wiring

I have a parts manual and the service manual

The service manual has lots of wiring information but I have a gremlin

When you turn off the switch to shut down the engine IF the marker lights or headlights are on it won't shut down.

Turn off the markers and headlights and voila it will shut down

I have studied the diagrams and cannot locate any connection like that

I know on buses that GLI used they had an interlock on the step light chime switch

This may be something similar but I have been unable to figure it out.

Could also be something left over from the previous owner.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Man, that sounds like a good thing!  I'd hate to leave the lights on and kill the battery!

If it was supposed to be wired like that then that is fine BUT if it isn't then I am concerned about getting feedback that could fry some kind of electrical component

Just my concern -- I had not ever heard of the wiring being set up like that on any other coaches

Mel, post the serial number of your coach, I'll check my diagrams for you.
I would study diagram for lights, verify each wire at relay on your bus, remove (temporarily) anything that does not match the diagram. Is your repower a mechanical or electronic controlled engine??
Make sure the new engine has proper ground straps to cradle and body.

Thank You Sammy

It is S13059

Yes Sammy it is a repower (L10) however it did the same thing when it had the 8V71 and spicer

It has an electronic tranny ZF now

Thank You

I would say it was  amint supervisors idea after some moron killed a few sets of 8D's.

Everything in that system should have fuse/breaker....so I wouldn;t worry too much about it.

FWIW, Don Laughlin the Riverside Casino owner in Laughlin NV has some new Van Hools that the engine won't shut down with the lights on and that is any light

Hi Melbo.

I suspect there will be a connection, intended or not, between the electric bars in the front junction panel below the driver's window. At least that's where mine is. PO wired up a bypass switch to enable the coach blowers when parked engine off, for stationary heating.  With that bypass switch on, the engine won't shut down.

Perhaps someone has wired some of the lighting off the "other" side, and in doing so, both sides are energized if the lights are on, and the engine won't shut off?

Chase with a tester and see if all the right things are powerless in there when they are supposed to be.

Melbo,

Just a short question. Will the bus start with the master off and the lights on?

With all my wiring issues I usually start with the wires that don't have the metal
tag numbers on them...FWIW

Oh by the by how was the trip driving home with the new repower?

Ummm... go easy on the trying to start it with the master off and lights on....

You might get some unintended smoke, depending on what is or isn't powered.

PO's mechanic tried that on an earlier attempt at my set-up!
