Different brand of tire for tag tires?

Based on the feedback I'm getting from my other topic about tread life on the tag axle, I'm thinking that until I get it diagnosed and fixed I should get some cheap tires to throw on the tags.  As long as I get teh same nominal size as the tires on the duals, is there anything else I need to be aware of?

I'm running 315/80 R22.5 Michelin Pilot XZA1's on all, and looking at putting some cheap used tires of the same size on the tags just for a quick trip to the desert.  The tires that are on there are way too worn to risk even a 350 mile trip.

Jim, as long as you get a tire able to carry the load you don't have to get them the same size as the duals.  In fact, since your left and right sides are not even connected you don't have to get the same size between the left and right.  Really, just get tires able to carry the load and then replace with "good" ones once your wearing issue has been fixed.

Jim- since you're only carrying less than 11,000lbs on your tags, put some 11R-22.5's on that I'm sure you can get for a whole bunch less money than a 12R or 315/80.  Even a good Bandag recap will work (about $150 each).  Good Luck, TomC

Excellent!

Hope you have a great trip and enjoy the time away!

Well, the guy just left my house.  He chared $150 total for two good tires, $150 to put them on, no sales tax and $10 each to haul away the old ones.  $320 total.  I'm happy, a lot safer, and headed out to the desert!

Joe's Truck tire service in Escondito, services San diego county and beyond. He had already been to Temecula when he got here, and left for Oceanside.  He said he does  a lot of the charter buses around here.

Jim,
FWIW A while back I had problems wearing out the tags on the 45'r SETRA and was going thru new tires like a baby goes thru diapers! I put on a set of 11R-22.5's as I was looking for and correcting the problem. Fixed the problem and continued to "run out" the 11R-22.5's until they needed replacement. Which they have done already, tommorow the tire guy will be here to regrove some of the tag tires I have here so I can get a little more service out of them before I buy a couple sets of steer tires and move the current steers back to the tags.

Buspit, I went to Ogilby rd, jsut south of Glamis.  I left right after posting that last one, just got back this afternoon.  Great sand, very smooth, no one there.

Quartzite was pretty close, just another hour or so up the road.  My cell phone didn't work there at all, very frustrating.

Back home now, leaving for New Orleans (flying) next week.

Cheap tires did great.
