All of you who have been there before: I got the 871 out of my MC-5 today to replace the clutch. The engine/tranny is on the specified dolly. Now I'm trying to figure out where to lift on the transmission so I can remove it and the clutch from the engine. There are no clearly identified lift points. Can I just loosen a couple of bolts and put a chain between them and lift with a cherry picker?

Fred: Don't lift on loose bolts. Make two or preferably three lifting eyes and put one on each side near the front and one close to the rear. Make the eyes out of short pieces of flatbar (1/4" X 2" is adequate) with a bolt size hole in one end and burn a hole at the other end large enough to feed a lifting chain through.

Thanks. I figured we would have to fabricate something.

For all you MC-5 owners who have never seen the front of your engine; here's what it looks like!  ;)

I just linked a couple of chains together, wrapped the chain around the transmission several times, and slightly lifed and pulled away.

Very easy to disconnect.  Lifted it with the tractor bucket, but I would think you could also use an engine hoist.

Moved it aside and out of the way and lowered it onto three large blocks on the ground.

If you put the bolt through the chain and then TIGHTEN the bolt it will work just fine.
