I noticed a pretty good oil leak at my starter,,, 6v92 mc9,,, is this a major repair or a seal that I may be able to repair ????????????

clean your engine good and see if you can find the leak above the starter and hope its not coming from the head also check and make sure its not coming from the air box tubes

There is a small bore tube coming out of the block just above the starter mounting flange. Assume it is an oil line and could be leaking.

The starter pinion engages the ring gear which is just spinning in air so should be no oil coming out at the starter motor. Any oil coming out of the engine rear crankshaft seal should drip out of the large slot in the bottom of the housing although I guess some small amount oil could get flung on to the starter pinion and seep out past the mounting flange.

The only wet flywheel housing I know of is on a V730.  If the starter were leaking with the V730, it would be red transmission fluid, not black engine oil. You probably have an engine leak that is dripping on the starter.  Otherwise the starter does not have oil to it-the bearings in the starter are just grease.  Good Luck, TomC

On my 8V71, the power steering tank is directly above the starter and one of the fittings leaks fluid onto the starter. I've taken the tank off three times and replaced the fittings. Threads still leak. Next time I'm going to braze the fitting.

How about oil leaking from the blower area - on top, at rear, running down the block onto your starter motor? There is a small oil feed "tube" between the blower and blower drive housing - check that.
I would recommend to wash the engine first, as it has been mentioned in an earlier post.
Good luck with your repair.

No one seems to have considered the rear crankshaft seal yet. For your sake...I hope that's not the case.
