The previous owner claims that my coach has a Allison ht 740.  What are some physical markers that I can check?

Quantum, What bus do you have? Older MCI, Eagle, Prevost most likely a 740. Ther is a tag above the oil pan on the side not sure which side. But I will look if you wish. Be careful under there, as these can and will kill. See if this pic helps.  Tom Y

Tom Y's picture is excellent.  Usually there is a manufacturers plate with serial number and model number on the right side of the transmission.  The visual difference between the 4 spd and the 5 spd, is that the 5 spd has the extra gear bolted on to the rear of the transmission-looks like about an 6 inch extension.  The HT series is big, much more so than the MT series.  HT740 is an excellent bullet proof transmission that will give many years of faithful service with only the most basic of service-mainly not letting the oil overheat, keeping the oil level up (especially important on bus transmissions that many times have smaller oil pans with less oil capacity for better ground clearance), and keeping the oil clean-having oil samples done once a year.  Good Luck, TomC
