I recently had a used engine installed.   The governor does not appear to be working.   By da book I turn high speed out 5 turns to start.   No reaction so I turned it in 5 turns.   No reaction so I turn it way out.   No reaction so I turned it way in but still no reaction.   Engine goes to 2500 RPM and governor is not working.   Which way should I be turning the adjustment or is there something I am missing.     Larry 4106

hey Larry, you need the detroit service manual to adjust the governor correctly,

you have to do ALL THE STEPS IN SEQUENCE for it to work properly

Larry,if the engine just goes to 2500 rpm the governor is working, are you trying to get more rpm or less rpm.check the governor cover also to make sure its installed correctly also make sure your injector control tubes work freely if not check and see if a injector has stuck open if you have the old style 2 screw tube

I back off the throttle at 2500 and it is still climbing.   I want to turn it down and I have followed Da Book by the step.   No injectors are hanging up.   Has anyone adjusted one?

I know when Don Fairchild reset my idle, he just loosened the big nut and then turned the hex set screw while holding the bolt.  The bolt sets the high speed.  Don did not change the high speed, but yet was affected by the idle speed change.  Went from 575 to 650 on the idle, and the high speed went from 2300 to 2400-which is not too high for a 8V-71.  Good Luck, TomC

Have you tried to see where the rpm stops?  I know that a fully warmed up 8V-71 can take 2800 with no problem, since that was what most truck drivers were doing in the '70's to get more power from their 318's.  Good Luck, TomC
