Bendix AD 9 Air Dryer

Finally broke down and bought a new Bendix AD 9 Air Dryer!

Looks pretty simple, BUT, any hints that I should be aware of?

This is going in a 1968 Eagle 01.

Can't wait to hear it sneeze!

Make sure it has the correct heater element for your application.
It comes with a 24v or a 12v element.
Check the Bendix website too.
They are easy to service.

Paul - the AD-9's don't really 'sneeze' - it's more like flatulence - IYKWIM

Sneeze, Flatulence, passing gass, burping or whatever manly noise it makes I don't care as long as it does the job.

Be sure you install a braided air line between the compressor and the AD-9. The braiding is not only for strength but for cooling. And if it comes into contact with anything else of a metallic nature be sure to use rubber heater hose or some close substitute to keep it from chafing.  I learned that the hard way.

Being broke down with a chafed primary air hose on the week end is NOT what I'd call fun. Fleetpride is probably the best and cheapest source of this hose.

As usual very good advice! But keep in mind some buses have the air driers mounted far away from the compressor. I haven't had to cuss at, I mean work on an Eagle in ages so I really don't recall where the drier is located. My Setras have them located right in front of the drive axle, and MCI 9's, 96's & 102's have them in front of the steer axle! So yes you have a very good and IMPORTANT piece of advice about coming off the compressor with a stainless braided line, but maybe not all the way to the drier in all cases!  FWIW   BK

The original dryer is no more than 4 feet from the compressor, behind the tag on the driver side. It does have a braided hose, I will check the condition when I start the project. Don't know yet if the size and fittings are the same or not, I doubt they are.

My dyer is mounted just behind the right tag wheel almost on the ground. It has two solid tubing lines; one up to the first tank and one up a crossmember, just behind the tank, where it connects to a 3 foot braided line to the compressor.

Paul, look inside the braided teflon line.Make sure it's not restricted with carbon buildup.
When an air compressor passes a little more oil than normal,with the heat from the compressed air,carbon is formed,restricting air flow to the dryer. Now is the perfect time to inspect it.

That's a good idea, I'll do it. Was going to inspect it anyway, but that post just bought it to the forefront. I might even just replace it for GP, only want to do this once.

I believe that the Air Dryer should be a minimum 6 feet from the compressor - FWIW
