DirecTV Setup

I haven't really traveled with the bus since switching to DirecTV.  When I had Dish Network, I entered a zipcode and it told me where to point the dish.  It seems that DirecTV wants a Lat/Lon, not a zipcode.  Is this correct or am I just not finding the screen where I can enter a zipcode?  Entering a Lat/Lon is not the end of the world, but finding a zip code for where you happen to be parked is easier than finding a Lat/Lon.

Thanks... Ross

Ross,
Not sure which model receiver you have, but our older Direct TV receivers give us the option of selecting Lat & Long or Zip Code.  Perhaps you have a different model receiver?  Jack

Ross, don't you have one of those nifty little GPS's that I was sure the whole world except me had?  If you do , it should give you a lat long quite easily.  Maybe even easier than finding the zip code :)

I don't know from Direct TV Ross but, if you have a mapping program like Streets & Trips it will give you GPS coordinates that are close enough for what you need.

Ross,

I found the easiest and fastest way to find a signal is to turn on the tv, go to the signal meter, look around outside and point my dish in the direction of those around the area. It takes less than 1 minute... good to go. If no sat around, just point south and move the sat. up & down and side to side slowly and you will find the signal. Good luck!!!!

Hi Ross,
My DirecTV receiver gives the elevation/az per zip codes.   In the setup screen, it'll ask for the zip code.  I've never used lat/lon.
Possible that the lat/long is a toggle function...zip code setup is there.  Most people couldn't readily come up with a lat/lon coordinate.
Are you using a DirecTV receiver?  Perhaps that could make a difference?

Hi Ross,

One answer to your question, "A7"  Don't need to know any zips or lan lat's anymore... just turn it on and 7 seconds later you will have your programing.

Sorry I couldn't stay long friday night at Bill and Roberta's R&R Grill. [we had a great meal] I'll catch up with you before you head south.

The option of lat & long would be great. I've found myself scrambling around looking for a zip several times.

Sure is Jack!  Now the box is mounted next to a ceiling light with 30' or so of wire rolled up.  Got to get that hidden somehow.   My rooftop manual dish was worse than useless before the elevation thingy.  Works great now.

Ross,

I think that a zip code option is available.  On mine, the lat and long option comes up first.  Another option at that point is something like "repeat satellite setup" - if you choose that a couple of prompts down the line it will ask for the zip code.

I'm with Nick on the A7!

Hey JR, you know, if you take that little elevation thingy and mount it on an A7 dish, then all you have to do is turn on the TV and BINGO!, you have the satellite!   ha ha ha.  Christy Hicks

Hey Christy,
If I had your MONEY....I'd have one of those newfangled KVH things (and maybe three buses like you have)...but it ain't gonna happen.
I don't watch that much TV!   ;)
Maybe I could afford that L2 (?) that Nick has for sale?  The one that needs a little minor body work and paint?  :D
I seem to be backing up this month...downstairs AC/gas pack quit working (I fixed with a new board AND A $90 dollar ADAPTOR)), damned upstairs computer finally gave up, and yesterday my laptop screen went dim.  Still works fine.  Too dark to enjoy using.  Bummer.  I've removed the backlite and inverter...now to see if I can find replacements.  If that's even the problem.  Oh well, this new upstairs computer is really nice to use...but this is Terri's computer...??   Hope she doesn't catch me dinking with it~ :o

Thanks everyone.  I did see the "Repeat Satellite Setup" option.  I'll try that.  I do usually have my laptop with Delorme and a GPS, but didn't last weekend.  In that case, finding a zip code was easier.
